Salary benchmarking, changing jobs, and possible promotions

I'm happy at my job, I have a very supportive manager who's pushing for a promotion for me (and apparently has a grand master plan for me). Unfortunately (or fortunately!) I've heard this before from previous managers and it has never fully materialised. My ultimate goal is to become VP in the next 5-8 years. The path seems fairly straightforward at my current company, so it would pay to stay.

On the side I've been contacted for roles similar to my current one on LinkedIn. A few have been the usual recruiter blah blah blah, and a few have materialised to further stages. That way I figured out that my current salary is OK but on the lower end.

Today during one of those recruitment calls I seemed to priced myself too high, but is there a real way to benchmark this?

In summary, would you stay for the promise? Or passively keep looking/be open to other opportunities? I think the salary is a moot point, they'd need to pay more (and not just nominally).
