Canary wharf or Greenwich for a wander?

Spending nearly a day nearby, where's best to wander around?

You can easily do them both in a day, one dlr from each other and they're both quite small.

RJnomore1 · 22/09/2022 23:29

I’m only an occasional visitor but I’d say Greenwich? Nicer, more to do, better food places imo

strawberrykat · 22/09/2022 23:29

Definitely Greenwich.

VioletTopaz · 22/09/2022 23:29

Greenwich. No contest.
Wander by the river. Through the naval college. Go in it. Into the chapel, the Painted Hall. Greenwich Park. The market. Lovely pubs.

I think CW is quite soulless tbh.

Canary wharf has had a whole upgrade and loads of great food places

VioletTopaz · 22/09/2022 23:31

And how many places do you know that have a fan museum!

Fab Museum

CW has got plenty of food options

PegasusReturns · 22/09/2022 23:34

You can easily do both and walk between them
using the Greenwich tunnel and DLR.

DoubleShotEspresso · 22/09/2022 23:36

If you've a full day you possibly could do both?

If I had to choose though Greenwich would win no contest-much more to explore an plenty of independent places to try out, plus museums, the Cutty Sark, park, galleries etc.
CW is pretty soulless tbh and full of chain restaurants, it's like any other financial district, very few other things to see.

Florabritannica · 22/09/2022 23:39

Totally agree. Greenwich Park is beautiful. Maritime Museum, Queen’s House (that staircase!); Fan Museum obvs. Walk up the hill onto Blackheath.

Pumpkintopf · 22/09/2022 23:40

If you can't do both then definitely Greenwich- the Royal Observatory is fab -

houseargh · 22/09/2022 23:41

Greenwich for sure. Canary Wharf might have good restaurants but otherwise it's just offices

Muddledandbefuddled · 22/09/2022 23:44

Greenwich. Much more character. You could happily spend a whole weekend there, so wouldn't try to cram Canary Wharf in too.

Trinity65 · 22/09/2022 23:54

Another vote for Greenwich here
My Birthtown (East Greenwich though, not the touristy West Greenwich)

Everydaywheniwakeup · 23/09/2022 00:06

Greenwich. Canary wharf is fine, but Greenwich is lovely. Spend the day there, then if the weather is good, head to Canary wharf. Walk across to West India Quay and drink cocktails outside the bars with all the twinkly lights.

RJnomore1 · 23/09/2022 16:44

Oh I forgot west India quay! The museum of dock lands is pretty good too.

Windyone · 23/09/2022 16:46

The museum of docklands is excellent. I think Canary Wharf is great for a wander. Sometimes there are food stalls at west India quay. Not sure what days

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 23/09/2022 16:53

Greenwich Park is stunning. Wonderful views from the top of the hill by the Observatory. You can get a sense of what the Isle of Dogs/Canary Wharf area is like by getting the DLR from Greenwich back into town. Another lovely thing to do from Greenwich is getting boat there or back again. No need to pay for the guided tour boats unless you want to. The Uber boats are very fast and frequent, and give you a good view.

balalake · 23/09/2022 17:39

Greenwich 100%.

HereBeFuckery · 23/09/2022 18:33

CW.

Greenwich is plagued by thousands of slow moving gawpers.

Yes, it's stunning and has lovely things to visit.

However I defy you to wander around and not become infuriated by the sheer density of people and the resultant queues, pushing and shoving, waste of time waiting to see interesting things/buildings/displays in the museum/noise/lack of space.

<used to live near Greenwich and visit weekly>
<the park is usually okay but the cafes are SHITE>

FayeGovan · 24/09/2022 10:27

Where in Greenwich can we get a great view for free?

OP posts:
FayeGovan · 24/09/2022 10:28

Sorry just seen by the observatory.
Also is the dlr overground?

OP posts:
piglet81 · 24/09/2022 10:31

yes, amazing views from the top of the hill by the observatory.

DLR is a mix - some above ground (incl elevated sections) and some tunnels. Sit at the very front and you can pretend to be the driver - it’s like a slow rollercoaster!

if you have kids with you, mudchute farm (between Greenwich and CW) is lovely.
