Provisional driving license

DorotheaDiamond · 22/09/2022 12:50

just applying for provisional license for dd(nearly 16) and it says she can only get a provisional moped license until 17

If she gets it does it automatically turn into a provisional car license at 17 or do we have to apply again?

Also - do you need a provisional car license to take the theory test?

You have to be 17 and have a provisional licence to sit the theory test. Once passed you must pass the practical within two years.

Are you sure you're on the right site? google comes up with a load of ads before the Gov.uk one. We've done 2 applications in the last year or so and never come across the moped thing. I believe you can apply from 3 months prior to their 16th birthday. If it's even a day before that then it might be a moped one.

Yes to your last question too.

You can apply for a provisional licence 2 months before their 17th birthday.

I just got the answers by Googling. The info is all there.

Hmm not sure about your googling everything I found says 15+9 months…

Applying online (at gov.uk) gets to the point of asking if there’s any reasons why you should be able to drive earlier (no) then says you are only eligible for a moped license - but doesn’t say if it converts automatically!!! Hence why I was asking people who had maybe done it!!!

I went to the horses mouth…I called DVLA!

what she receives now will be valid just for moped initially - car category will be shown on there with a start date of her 17th birthday…so will be immediately valid at that point!

Some wrong info on here, ordinarily you apply for a driving license for cars at. 16 years 9 months but you can apply for a license to ride a moped from 15 years 9 months and if you are disabled and in receipt of higher level mobility DLA for driving a car

personally I would wait to do the written test until you’ve been driving a while as driving tests are hard to get at the moment and are currently booking now for 6 months time

I already answered your question. Would have been polite to have read my answer. Also would have saved you time calling the DVLA 🙄

@cathycake i appreciate you did…but lots of others did with conflicting information!
