My husband and I are finally splitting up after years of hell. I’m 65 and tomorrow my husband is putting our home on the market . He wants his share to move away.
I won’t have enough from the proceeds to purchase another home and average rent round here is about 1000 a month. I have a little part time job and all my family and support are in this area. So don’t want to move away. I don’t even know if anyone would rent me a property I will soon be pensionable age and I have a small dog . Most places won’t touch you with a dog. 🤦‍♀️
I could pay a years rent up front to secure somewhere but eventually I will run out of funds .
Could I apply for a council property or Would I not be eligible ?
I feel sick with worry I certainly didn’t expect To be homeless at this at this stage in my life !

It is sometimes easier to get housing for over 55's. Perhaps speak to Age Uk in your area as they may know of places you can try. Or could you perhaps look at shared equity if you can afford the rent part or maybe you can claim help from universal creidt with the rent part if no capital left paying the mortgage part? If you run out of funds to pay rent then you can claim Universal credit towards your rent when your capital drops below 16k, and housing benefit after you turn state pension age depending on what pensions you have available to you at that time. If you do claim Universal credit you may need to look for more hours of work if you ahve no health conditions preventing, you from doing this.

I feel for you, as I'm your age. Could you rent a room from a friend for a while until you sort yourself out?

Do speak to the housing department. Accommodation for the over 55 is in less demand in some areas. Either way get yourself registered as it will be affordable rent going forward.

How much equity are you looking at. Would a shared ownership be possible.

Good luck with the move I hope your new home is a happy one.
