security tag left on jeans - help!

I bought some jeans in John Lewis this afternoon but they left the security tag on and I have only just noticed after getting home. It's too late to take them to a shop to have it removed, and I am going overseas tomorrow- jeans were bought to wear on this trip as my others are falling apart! What can I do? Is it possible to. remove the tag at home?

Could you buy another pair at the airport and return these when you get back?

FourEyesGood · 21/09/2022 18:06

It depends on what sort of security tag it is. There are tips on how to remove some of them online (e.g. YouTube). Alternatively, you could try taking the jeans to your local supermarket - with your receipt - and explaining it to them. They might remove the tag for you, if they can.

I doubt it - will be flying pretty early, so wouldn't be surprised if nothing much is open. Plus I like these ones! except for the ink cartridge obviously. I'd honestly wear them with the tag on if this wasn't a business trip!

Sorry - just seen that you’ve already said it’s too late to go somewhere to have it removed.

This happened to me, check youtube - I think thats how I sorted mine out. (Mine was a present from my auntie in Australia).

fairlygoodmother · 21/09/2022 18:12

Do you have a waitrose near you? Same company, might be able to help?

Sunbun19 · 21/09/2022 18:22

If you freeze them overnight the ink will freeze so if it cracks when you try to remove ilthe tag it won't spill everywhere

BingleDiBing · 21/09/2022 18:28

Had this with a present (online delivery sent direct to us). Very VERY careful hacksaw did the trick.

There were 4 ink capsules in it, made of super thin plastic. Can't emphasise enough how carefully we did it Grin I'm not sure I'd want to try it with clothes.

The freezer idea is good. Although I'd be worried that when the ink expands as it freezes, it might pop the capsules.

Some of them just need a magnet to open them. Youtube some of the options.

I’ve had this - very annoying !
didnt want to drive all the way back so managed to remove it with garden secateurs 😊

Polly99 · 21/09/2022 18:38

Tiny waitrose nearish me say they are unable to help- nearest JL over an hour away. I've put the jeans in the freezer to freeze any ink for a few hours and then will see what I can do. Will report back!

If you have the receipt maybe another supermarker may be able to help?

SunThroughTheCloudsAt6am · 21/09/2022 18:57

I just slowly and carefully did it with a couple of forks back to back until I could get some boltcutters in there - but I appreciate not everyone has a well stocked toolbox (also sturdy forks, or they bend)

Polly99 · 21/09/2022 21:07

Hm, I've now chickened out because the tag is kind of flat on both sides so hard to work out which is the pin side and which is not. Will order a large cheap magnet and see I can sort it after my trip. What a pain.

It really, really annoys me when this happens!

DH bought a pair of jeans in JL in London on a day trip there, when we got home the tag was on. Thankfully we have a JL in our city but it was still very inconvenient.

I always check now!

Unfortunately there's not much you can do OP - trust me I have googled lots.

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 21/09/2022 21:19

I used the two forks trick. It was something that had been posted from the gap and there aren't any nearby.
It worked fine

Reallyhadenough · 21/09/2022 21:23

Very strong magnet x

creampuffs · 21/09/2022 21:30

If the tag doesn't have ink in it then you can literally bash the tag off with a hammer. It's worked for me before.

cherrypiepie · 21/09/2022 21:52

My husband drilled one off but it didn't have ink in it.

Again due to to overseas the next day.

We tried a super magnet from where he works on a plant and it did t work.

Yea the ones in the shops are super strong. Try A local shop.

I feel for you, they need to compensate you!

redthefraggle · 21/09/2022 22:53

I've burnt one off very successfully before. There's plenty of videos on YouTube but do it outside because it stinks!
