Strikes derailed my London weekend plans

Due to travel to London as part of a wider train based tour of the country. Have booked concert tickets, theatre tickets and hotel, none of which are refundable.

Rail strikes now announced for 1st October and we therefore can't get home as planned. The obvious solution is to stay another night but it looks like all of London and its environs are fully booked. There is some v limited availability on the lower end of the scale (£280 for a travelodge😱) and more choice of you're happy to pay £400+

Is there anywhere very lovely that is commutable from London and priced slightly lower that we could get to (bare in mind no trains running) for our extra night. I'm happy to pay £250-300 for somewhere nice. Alternatively if any lovely mumsnetter can find me a hotel in London that I won't have to pawn my wedding ring for on Saturday I would be super impressed.

I'm sick as a chip. If we cancel we lose £££ of bookings, if we extend it is going to cost us £££ extra. There is no way we could drive as there is a specific train journey we are taking as part of our break that is a bucket list item and pretty expensive and part of my dh's birthday present

Look at all the places at the end of the tube line. Richmond might have some nice hotels. I know Wimbledon village does.

That's assuming the tubes are running?

have you checked airbnb? booking.com?

SuperCamp · 21/09/2022 17:36

Have you checked coach services? National Express / Megabus etc?

Accommodation is in short supply that weekend because it's London Marathon. Travel plans for almost all the marathon runners are also ballsed up, so I feel your pain (but don't have an answer!). I am currently looking into plans B, C, D and E for getting to London on that day!

Oh bugger. It totally bypassed me that it was L Marathon weekend, what with the only news for the last two weeks being Her Maj related...

I will look at Richmond, thanks. Assume tubes are running.

I looked at National Express and it costs more to get to Darlington than my first class train ticket! Excellent solidarity to the strikers there, they must be making a fortune! As it is DH's birthday we were planning a bit more luxury than the megabus can provide.

Try Ruislip. It's on a tube line from London, pretty-ish bits of it and there does seem to be some availability for a quick Google.

The Premier Inn in Stratford has doubles for about £205. It’s near the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park which is supposed to be worth a visit.

I think there are some hotels near Uxbridge/Hillingdon which is on a tube line. Or even Heathrow.

Thanks all. In the end I booked a premier Inn in Central london. The availability was refreshing every 5 minutes and it was a case of 'fastest finger first'
