HMRC scam calls

Had a few random voicemails on the landline and my mobile saying there’s an issue with my tax return and I owe money. I’m up to date with all self assessments, an accountant prepares and submits. I’ve previously logged in and not seen any outstanding payments, although this has happened to me in the past so not beyond the realms of possibility. I’ve ignored the odd call thinking it was dodgy and I’d get a letter.

Anyway, got an automated call on my mobile yesterday saying same thing and to press 1 to speak to an advisor. I’m under the weather and in haste pressed 1 and gave my name and DOB. IDIOT!!! Was then told an audit of my accounts has shown to be fraudulent and I owe £1000 odd pounds. Was told a warrant had been issued for my arrest - at which point I realised it was a scam. Told her I was now recording the conversation, asked her name and why I hadn’t received a letter. Told letters were not policy. I got angry at this point and said I’m reporting this as fraud to which she was rude to me and then hung up.

I’ve now reported the number to HMRC fraud as it’s a known scam. Just letting you all know in case you get one. Not sure what else I can do! Said my name and DOB v fast and they weren’t English so unless recording and really know how to spell it not sure that’s info they really wanted?

Grrrr 😡

I've had a couple of HMRC scams too. Calls and letters saying I owe them money, which I don't as I'm an employee and do PAYE and I only earn £22 grand a year anyway. When I googled the number which they gave me to call on the letter is showed as a scam. The lettering etc was very convincing though. Then I started getting letters saying I owe VAT, which I do not - these sometimes come with another number to ring (also a scam number). However, I now realize that someone has registered me for VAT, twice! Once with my name spelled correctly and once with it spelled incorrectly. Watch out for this too.

To compound the frustration, it is almost impossible to get through to HMRC to sort this out. They put me on hold for 15 - 25 minutes and then just drop the call. I'm currently on hold for the 3rd time this morning.
