Artistic/synchronised swimming aesthetic

Why does artistic swimming always seen to have the same robotic aesthetic? And what would happen if a team decided to be creative and do something different?

They'd sink?

😂can see that would limit things but to my totally uneducated eye they all look to be doing the same style movements even out of the water

I have to agree.
They seem to do the same moves as those Hollywood swimming gymnasts did in the old '30s/40s musical spectaculars.

Doesn't seem to have moved on.

Randomly just listened to a podcast about the ‘Hollywood swimming gymnasts did in the old '30s/40s musical spectaculars’, it was fascinating.
