Visiting Munich in Oktoberfest (but not for that). How to?

We're in Salzburg, driving to Stuttgart on Thursday (delivering offspring to uni). Where might we stay overnight in order travel into Munich to see the sights without paying Oktoberfest hotel/gasthof prices? Any ideas, please?

I absolutely love Erding and its very quick and easy to get into Munich from there
