Somewhere nice to stay for a night in York? And things to do?

I want to go to the ghost merchants.

I like spooky/woo things.

Accommodation needs to be close to trainstation.

Somewhere nice to eat that is tasty but not super fancy, more relaxed.

Any recommendations please?

www.ihg.com/spnd/hotels/gb/en/york/yorpy/hoteldetail?cm_mmc=GoogleMaps--SP--GB-_-YORPY Short walk from station. Think you can walk to meet the ghost walk, or buses pass nearby.

Any price restrictions? The Principal is right next to the station (you can walk into the back of it from the station!) and good prices imo. The Malmaison across the road is good too, but I'd choose The Grand over it if the principal is full. They're about five minutes walk or less from the station, so still close 😊

Ooo for a place to eat, Delrios is amazing - Italian food, in an old cellar so really atmospheric and the food is genuinely fab. Would definitely book first! Not super fancy at all, really relaxed and just a lovely restaurant, we go every time we visit York.

Also - ghost merchants are amazing, and so are the spooky walking tours they do in the evenings!!

Fabulous polish restaurant called the Blue Bicycle is our go to x don’t stay at malmaison even if you have a massive budget . Lots of decent local independent hotels

How about the Hocus Pocus Hotel? I haven't been personally but the trip advisor reviews are good.

Just a note the polish restaurant is the blue Barbikan not the blue bicycle (that was the restaurant in the building before them) but would definitely second them as an excellent option for food Smile

The queue is massive for the ghost merchants, unsure why, it's all a load of emperors new clothes. Closed mid week currently

This is a really good walking tour with a mix of ghost/gore stories from a fun guide. Hocus Pocus hotel looks fab and is right in the middle of York. I stayed here though: www.hedleyhouse.com/

It's lovely. It has its own very good restaurant and it's central but a bit tucked away.

Staycity aparthotels are great, you're own little apartment inside a hotel basically. It's beside the Barbican so not far from the station and 10 min walk into the city centre. There is a Chinese round the corner from it and it's absolutely amazing, best Chinese I've ever had, it's called Shi Shang, there's an Italian there too that gets excellent reviews.
There is a ghost tour bus, it looked like so much fun!!!!!

Place marking as planning a visit in the spring time. Why do people need to queue for the Ghost Merchants?

Worried22123 · 19/09/2022 22:24

I've been on two ghost walks in York and they were both really good. One was the original ghost walk that starts by the old pub on the river/bridge and the other was Mad Alice.
Also, the yorvik centre and the chocolate factory place was cool and a nice walk along the wall. Plenty of museums. There's so much to do in York!

KilledByWitches · 19/09/2022 23:07

I’ve stayed at the Lady Anne Middleton a couple of times. That was a lovely hotel.

I love the ghost merchant shop.

Accommodation :
The Lawrence
Middletons

Woo things:
Ghost merchants
York Museum (has some grim/creepy historical parts, also very interesting)
The Potions Cauldron (can book a potion class, reasonably priced - potion=booze)
then go for dinner and book a ghost tour in the evening for after dinner. Many to choose from but the top ranked ones do seem the best.
Most of the pubs are dark, woo like!

I bloody love York
