I've just googled the label found in a charity shop buy

Bought a handmade dress in the charity shop. Beautiful fabric but not my style and too small but am always looking for fabric to reuse. I paid £15.

I washed it and put it with my fabric stash. Today having a tidy up and notice there is a label in the dress. So googled it. Similar dresses being sold currently for £350 😮
Now not sure whether to resell it or just enjoy the beautiful fabric in another way...

Anyone ever got a really unexpected charity shop bargain?

Resell. No question.

Sniffypete · 19/09/2022 14:48

Sell it! Think how much fabric you could buy with the money!

lljkk · 19/09/2022 14:48

What SniffyPete said of course. Donate £100 back to the charity shop if you're feeling some guilt.

What brand is it?

Divebar2021 · 19/09/2022 14:50

I would re-sell probably. I had a similar situation for my brothers wedding at Christmas. I bought a red velvet dress in a charity shop and discovered it was some expensive brand I’d never heard of ( quite a “mother of the bride” type place I think). I did wear it but might sell it on now.

Not charity shop but dd was given an office chair to use during lockdown. When she went back into the office she asked how she would get the chair back ( a colleague had dropped it off in a van as it's bulky), she was told to keep it as it was surplus .

Anyway , we got fed up with walking round it and it getting in the way and after double checking with her office , I put it for sale on FB for £10. We were inundated with offers, some for more than £10. I looked at the label and it was a Herman Miller worth £££££

Strangely when I bought it, in one of those slightly posher charity shops (think Mary Queen of Shops) I was chatting with the assistant about it and saying how beautiful it was and someone had made a lovely job of sewing it. But neither of us noticed the label.
I don't feel guilty, because I didn't buy it knowing I was getting something so valuable. However, if I do make money out of it, I will donate some money back as I am actually a regular charity giver and fundraiser.

Definitely resell! I once bought a Mulberry bag in a charity shop for £4.99 - I wasn't 100% sure it was genuine but for that price took a punt. I have a few genuine ones and when I took the chazza one to the Mulberry concession at Fenwick where I buy them, the assistant confirmed it was real. I enjoyed it for a few months then sold it for £450.

I've spent literally hundreds at the charity shop in question over the years and donated loads of decent stuff so I didn't feel too guilty!

HappyLondonWoman · 19/09/2022 15:01

This is it but mine is prettier fabric imho!

Are those sold prices or listed prices?

I think I'd resell it and let someone have it who was actively looking for it or liked it as it was. You could pick up all sorts of fabric with the proceeds. If it made that much I'd direct a % back to charity but obviously nobody is obliged to do so.

Would love to see the fabric!

holidaynightmare · 19/09/2022 15:03

Get it on eBay!

HappyLondonWoman · 19/09/2022 15:16

This is the fabric

I would resell and make a very generous donation to the charity.

womaninatightspot · 19/09/2022 15:45

I’d pop it on eBay but with a decent buy it now price it’s not a common brand so I think something you’d only get if you were specifically looking.

womaninatightspot · 19/09/2022 15:46

Gorgeous dress though I love that 50s style.

SapphireSeptember · 19/09/2022 19:11

I paid 50p for a sterling silver and amethyst necklace last year, the stones are a lovely deep purple. 💜 I've worn it non stop since and think it money well spent. 😊

MacaroniBaloney · 19/09/2022 19:17

I bought a designer leather bag, it was priced at £20 and once home googled it and it's worth over £200. I'm not selling it though.
