Surprise IKEA refund… anyone else?

Sparrow91 · 19/09/2022 07:22

I’ve woken up this morning to a refund from IKEA in my account - in fact, two as my transaction from the restaurant has also been refunded.

Altogether, it’s over £600 refunded, but for furniture that is assembled and upstairs sitting pretty!

My gut feeling is not to touch it.. but has anyone woken up to this?

Have you checked the original transactions? Could they have charged you twice?

I would contact them, personally. To find out. If they didn't mean to return it, AFAIK there's a really long period of time they have to claim it back, at which point I believe you are required to allow them to do so. Your best bet is to stick it in an account that will earn some interest & forget about it, for several years.

Oh and to answer the other part of the OP, no unexpected refund here. I've bought several lots of items from Ikea over the past year, just checked & I didn't get any refunds.

When did you make the purchase?

Yes, I’ve checked them - no double charging has taken place…

I guess I’m going to have to wait until tomorrow and see what happens, I half expect them to reverse the transaction overnight!

When did you make the purchase?

It was from Sunday 11th - the refunds have appeared in overnight, one around 1am, one at 6am.

we have had exactly the same, also from Sunday 11th. Although our purchases were less significant - £41ish in store and £2.50 in the cafe!

Powerb123 · 19/09/2022 09:36

I have also woken up to the same thing. A big refund from a purchase on the 11th September. Very confused because I didn’t return any of my items or request a refund…

AgnesNaismith · 19/09/2022 09:42

Oh dear, IKEA are having a bit of a nightmare! Purchased online or in store?

Jxmaxd · 19/09/2022 09:49

This has happened to me to this morning! I was in IKEA this same date as you. Have you heard anything else about this?

Sparrow91 · 19/09/2022 09:56

Ooooh I’m (kinda) glad I’m not the only one!

All the purchases were instore - in the Nottingham store, was anyones refund from a different store?

There’s nothing on Twitter or that’s been posted by IKEA to explain it. If we used cards in store are they able to access our accounts to take the refund back? I don’t know how they will fix it!

Powerb123 · 19/09/2022 09:57

Mine was from their Glasgow store

This was my thought too! I wondered if they would just do a chargeback on the refund transaction?

I’ve assumed there wouldn’t be any communication until tomorrow, all the stores are (rightly) shut today so I’d assume it would be the same for their UK comms team.

Jesus this could bankrupt them if there's thousands of transactions £500/£1,000+++ and they're unable to retrieve them.

My bet is on a disgruntled employee about to quit his/her job after one last hurrah! Wink

Mines was from the Edinburgh store! I used my card in store.

It could be that they've failed to retrieve the funds from customer's banks. For those not aware, when you make a purchase your bank freezes the funds which makes it appear to have left your account, but it sits in pending transactions for a while until the Merchant (IKEA in this case) retrieve the funds a few days later. It may be that they never did, so the money has dropped back in. It often does if not collected within 7-10 days

Could it be due to the bank holiday? It’s obviously not been ‘scheduled’ in as many others are, perhaps the short notice has caused havoc with normal banking processes?

Happened to me a few weeks ago. Transaction was reversed again that evening.

Sparrow91 · 20/09/2022 10:21

So I’ve had a look this morning and it’s still there! 🤷🏼‍♀️ Not sure where to start with getting this sorted now 🙈

Went back in today

Sabrinasouffle · 13/10/2022 11:00

Would love to know what happened to you all? I’m curious to know

Sparrow91 · 14/10/2022 07:31

For me, it stayed in my account for about 2 weeks in total, before being taken out on the 27th!
