Hangovers - why do we do it ourselves ?

I've been hanging all day. Sore head, feeling sick & aching. I've wasted a whole day as a result of my hangover. I've sat on the sofa for most of the day. Had 2 showers to try to feel 'normal' again and just generally moped around the house all day.

Drinking that much really wasn't worth it.

Why do we do it to ourselves ?!

Because it feels brilliant while we’re doing it.
but oh my word - it’s SO not worth it. I suffer so much the next day.

uhtredsonofuhtred1 · 18/09/2022 20:41

I almost never drink anymore. The main reason is that I can't handle the all day hangover! I think I've developed an intolerance to alcohol because I spend all the next day vomiting bile. Maybe once or twice a year I'll think it will be fun to get pissed, which I regret massively the next day.

Scatmanfarm · 18/09/2022 20:41

@PreColumbian it's totally not worth it. I think I would like to go almost tee total but friends & partner would be pissed off with this as they want a drinking partner when I go out with each of them.

@uhtredsonofuhtred1 my hangovers are getting worse and lasting longer as I've got older. Im almost 50 and it takes a good day to get over a hangover.

I also get horrific hangovers. The fun of being pissed is never worth the hangover. I hate it so much that I don’t drink anymore.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 18/09/2022 20:50

Because the night before is so much fun!

I say that having just got over my first hangover in about 10 years.

PreColumbian · 18/09/2022 20:53

I’m 53 and haven’t been able to drink like I used to in quite a few years.
Cant drink pub wine at all.
The physical effects and the anxiety the next day or two - horrific.

Soproudoflionesses · 18/09/2022 20:54

Because we never learn!

Cynderella · 18/09/2022 20:56

My ability to handle a hangover seriously declined in my 40s. I have a glass of wine most evenings. Maybe twice a month, I'll have a second glass. Once a year a third.

Even less often ... well, more than three and I'm a lost cause. The last time was pre Covid, so I'm well out of practice. I feel ill next day and tired for at least two more. I may never get drunk again.

Unfortunately for me, I'm 37 and I've been like this for at least 5 years. I only start to feel "ok" by 7.30pm and that's after being bedridden and throwing up all day. Yes I loved the night before but definitely not enough to suffer so much the next day. Especially not with young kids on my own

longtompot · 18/09/2022 21:19

I love the taste of wine, especially a good full bodied Rioja or a nice oaky Chardonnay, too much and always end up have one glass too many. I've cut out wine completely this month and just been having g&ts and have had zero hangover or even feeling a bit rough. I'm 50 and have found since about 35 ish alcohol, esp wine, has affected me more and more

Bobbybobbins · 18/09/2022 21:22

I can't drink much anymore as can't bear the hangovers. Half a bottle of wine is it for me and that gives me a headache.

Dalaidramailama · 18/09/2022 21:22

My last hangover was that bad I burst blood vessels in my eyes from all the vomiting. It was definitely worth it though which was a rarity.

9 times out of 10 absolutely not worth it.

Livpool · 18/09/2022 21:28

I have never had a hangover but they sound awful! Hope you at least had a good night OP

CatchersAndDreams · 18/09/2022 21:28

Urgh I hear you OP.

I went out out Friday night. Spent all of yesterday recovering, today I'm still tired and out of sorts. I'm quite annoyed at myself as I was going to have such a productive weekend. I was in the mood to have an autumn sort out in the house and garden until I couldn't say no to going out with my friend.

Scatmanfarm · 18/09/2022 21:40

@CatchersAndDreams I hear you ! I had also hoped to do quite a bit today. Was going to go swimming and or running. Couldn't face any of that. I had to drive to the shop for milk, I felt like I was going to throw up in the car. I'm cross at myself for wasting today. I got into bed at 7pm tonight, still feeling out of sorts and with the sh*ts too.

@Dalaidramailama omg that sounds horrific. Enough to put you off forever.

@Scatmanfarm

Roll on tomorrow it will be a new world for you 😂. It’s a relief when night time finally comes.

HarpicHarpy · 18/09/2022 21:47

Same 😔 and it's so annoying because I love alcohol! But the night sweats, headache, anxiety, grumpiness, backache (kidneys?) and bloated face is just not worth it anymore. I'm typing this with a hangover and fresh determination to knock it on the head 😁

PreColumbian · 20/09/2022 22:29

Oh I’ve felt angry with myself so many times for the waste of one or two days. There’s no quick cure or fix. It’s hours of feeling terrible.

TheChosenTwo · 20/09/2022 23:13

I don’t drink much, the hangovers are much worse now than they used to be and wipe me out for the whole of the next day. I spend it in bed - shit way to spend half my lovely weekend and crap for the kids. It might happen twice a year now but I can make my peace with that. It was once a month and I eventually snapped out of it and realised it wasn’t worth it.
I’m definitely NOT tee total, I bloody love a drink but I either stop at 2 or don’t start at all.

Saying that, I had 3 pints a few weeks ago and then a couple of vodkas, I felt okay the next day except a bit tired (ended up being a very late night) and just a bit fuzzy. But the day wasn’t totally written off.
