Anti perspiring that works for teenage boy

Have tried a few brands. Currently trying Right Guard but it's not cutting it. When he gets in the car after school he really stinks, and we've just been out for a walk and he reeks, bless him. He is beginning to notice it himself but still only 13 so it's embarrassing for him. I have no doubt it's hormonal-driven.

He showers every day. Wears cotton shirts for school but has same issue with cotton t shirts and also the football-shirt material tops.

Am going to buy him soap to wash with instead of shower gel as I've just read an old thread where that was a recommendation.

I am sympathetic and want to help him without embarrassing him. - please give me the name of something that will stop the smell, I feel for his teachers and for members of the public who have to sit next to him on the train home!

Anti perspirant in the title not perspiring. Stupid auto correct

Watching. DS is the same age and I swear he reeks of hormones!

Iamnotthe1 · 18/09/2022 16:15

Is it him or is it the clothes? Wearing clothes that have already been worn will lead to stinking of sweat even if the body that went into them was clean. Get him to try changing completely daily and see if that makes the difference.

Pit rock.

BeBesideTheSea · 18/09/2022 16:19

He probably isn’t putting enough on - needs more than a half-second squirt (DS is the same if he doesn’t use enough)

BakewellGin1 · 18/09/2022 16:28

Things that help for oldest DS..
Shower or bath twice a day
Change of school shirt daily
Blazer washed every 2 to 3 days
Anti perspirant each morning and evening plus before he goes to any sport session mid-day. He also pops it in his bag for before and after PE.
Wash any lounge wear daily
Dressing gown and bedding at least once per week.
Uses a roll on and also a spray

My daughter has started using Wild natural deodorant and raves about it. She has been fairly smelly since y5 and, on Thursday (only started using the wild deodorant about a week ago) made me smell the school shirt she’d been wearing all day and it didn’t smell at all. She is so pleased as she’s been very self conscious about it.

PiratePenguin · 18/09/2022 16:37

Anti-perspirants and deodorants work in different ways. Maybe trying a deodorant instead could help?

allypallys · 18/09/2022 16:37

Perspi-Guard Maximum Strength Antiperspirant Spray, on Amazon, absolutely 100% works. Life changing.

planedelay · 18/09/2022 16:44

Thanks for the replies so far. Yes he is showering every day. Yes he wears a clean top every day. This is happening even with brand new school shirts so it's not the lacking of washing the clothes.

Yes he has tried just a deodorant and this was worse. I have just had a chat and he's agreed he's going to try washing under his arms with soap from now on, spraying the anti perspirant for longer and taking it to school and using some at lunch and before and after PE religiously.

I think I'm still after that magic "life changing" product though as various ones aren't cutting it at all.

ds(18) has tried various brands that are available in the supermarket and still thinks Sure is the best, he uses the 48hr, there is also now a 72hr that might be worth a try. At school he had PE most days and he reapplied after PE.

bridgetjonesmassivepants · 18/09/2022 16:59

I've never found Sure or Right Guard work very well, try Mitchum, this seems better. Also agree that he needs to be using lots of it.

Heartofglass12345 · 18/09/2022 17:10

Try Mitchum roll on and drying it with a hair dryer after applying it so it's completely dry. Maybe he can top up with a spray in school if he needs to. My son is only 9 and I notice a BO smell on him sometimes too, I wasn't expecting it yet!!

Swalewhale · 18/09/2022 17:11

Mitchum

cbatopainttheshed · 18/09/2022 21:22

Also came to say Mitchum. My DH swears by it.

KangarooKenny · 18/09/2022 21:24

Yea, wash with soap not shower gel. Wash clothes with biological powder and no conditioner.
And yes to Mitchum.

planedelay · 18/09/2022 21:53

Thanks all. For those saying Mitchum, is it a roll on, a spray, or something else? Or doesn't it matter?

The sure cream one you put on at night, and wash with proper soap under arms
Pic attached, I get it off Amazon as it's cheaper. Much prefer this scent to any of the women's versions!

Mitchum

GretaVanFleet · 18/09/2022 22:17

We had this issue we found sure roll on was very good and DS still sprayed the useless deodorant he preferred that was useless too.

Whatmeagain · 18/09/2022 22:33

My daughter had a nightmare with this and we’d tried all sorts but someone recommended Mitchum as it had worked for her daughter. We got it and she’s never had a problem since and that was over 5 years ago. Don’t know if they do a boy’s version but worth a go if they do

Whatmeagain · 18/09/2022 22:34

She prefers the stick version as well

UnityO · 18/09/2022 22:44

What works for my DS15-

-Shower every morning and evening.

  • Fresh clothes every day - school blazer gets washed every few days.
  • Mitchum deodorant- sprayed properly after showering and drying in the morning/ ie not just a little squirt of it up his shirt!
-regular change of bedclothes
lechatnoir · 18/09/2022 22:48

Sure roll on works for mine but do make sure they are putting enough on - I couldn't work out why my son still smelt so much until I saw him applying his roll on one day - he barely touched anything so a demo in proper rolling the whole armpit was needed he was mortified but it did the job!
