Own brand items that are better than the branded version?

I'm helping to organise an event that will include some money-saving tips and sharing of ideas. As an icebreaker and a bit of fun, I would like to do a couple of taste tests. Any suggestions? The age range is mixed and will include children.

I need products that are everyday items, not expensive and available everywhere.

Please share your own non-branded favorites.

The Eat well for less programme always used to do taste tests and the branded products were often beaten by own brand. You could have a Google search and see which items are easy to test?
You could try Jaffa cakes vs Supermarket own brand. DS insists JC are the best but struggled to identify them in a taste test.
I don’t see much of a difference between jacobs cream crackers and supermarket own but I think Jacob’s may have writing on them?
Crisps can be a good one but something like McCoy’s vs Supermarket ridge cut -walkers are too identifiable by taste/crunch, as are Pringles.

Lotus biscoff spread vs the Aldi version!

stuff in tins like tuna, sweetcorn, custard usually tastes the same

Chocolate - Green and Blacks, Hotel chocolate, Galaxy , Cadbury against Aldi and Lidl own brands.
Biscuits - Aldi Oaties against Hobnobs.
Yoghurt - own brands v premium

Thanks, some good ideas there.

I much prefer aldi zx coke to coke zero or pepsi max

Any supermarket brand yeast extract is better than marmite. A hill I am prepared to die on.

I used to love tesco value jaffa cakes more than Mcvities. With biscuits, you do need to watch because Mcvities do print their name on the actual biscuit.

Knock off weetabix is better IMO but again, some are a slightly different shape.

I can't tell the difference between Nutella and Asdas own.

I would guess that golden caster sugar and caster sugar will be the same branded or not, also orange juice, cornflakes, wheat biscuits. My family prefers Sainsburys Taste the difference strawberry jam to all others.

Sainsburys vs Heinz baked beans. They’re not exactly the same but close enough for taste test fun.

Arenanewbie · 17/09/2022 23:43

@Everylittlethingsgonnabealright
I was also going to put them - DH and DD are absolutely adamant that sainsburys beans are better, I can tell the difference absolutely I just don’t eat them much.

Maybe not very practical for a taste test but I love the Tesco fishfingers that are 10 for 79p

Waitrose own brand mayonnaise; so much nicer than Helmans

Lidl do a caramel bar - a Mars bar copy. They come in fun size and packs of six so would be ideal.

Lidl hot cross buns versus Warburtons? Lidl's win hands down.
