Why do people lie?

Of course I know why people lie; when the truth will get them in trouble, when a white lie will benefit them or make somebody else feel better. But why do people lie for no reason, when it isn't any of the above, boastful or funny or anything really; just a lie?

I've met a guy and a few times I have caught him in lies.

Why do people do this? Is it a personality issue/psychological issue? Self esteem?

Does anyone know and would anyone admit to doing it and telling us why?

Maybe lying is better than the truth - fantasy better than reality

how are you - ok (sick and tired)
what job do you do - manager (admin Asst.)
what did you do at the weekend - went out for dinner (stayed home as usual)

To make themselves more interesting? Boredom?

Even those lies that have been mentioned by PP seem to make sense. I know what you mean though OP people who lie about random stuff that doesn't even matter. Or take it upon themselves to lie when no one has even asked anything. Very odd.

For gain for shame or embarrassment

To protect relationships. build them up or build status. Try to make selves seem more important & interesting. Attention seeking
