Acupuncture needle left in back

Hi everyone,

I'm 20 weeks pregnant and getting some acupuncture from my midwife (she's also trained with acupuncture and has many years experience) to help with carpal tunnel. It's all new to me and I just had my second session this morning. all went fine but when I got home, I found a needle still in my upper back. The area is bright red, swollen and bloody sore. I assume this won't do any proper damage to nerves / or muscles etc? (As I said, I'm new to this). It must've been in for around 90 minutes in the end, and no I didn't feel it until I got home😅
I guess I was just wondering if being in longer than the 20 minutes will do any harm?

Thanks all

Bloody hell! I've had lots of acupuncture and they count them in and count them out in my experience. I doubt it will do any damage but I wouldn't let her near me again!

This is my idea of a horror film. Can you get someone else to check your back just in case there’s any others?! Def wouldn’t be letting her near me again either!

I feel unsettled about it now. She has over 20 years experience with this so I really don't understand how it could've happened😕

NHS midwife? If so you need to escalate immediately to her and line manager. This is a serious error.
Take photographs now and make a note of your symptoms.

Take a photo of the needle too.

Calm down

It will be absolutely fine, mistakes happen. The needles are very fine, they're not strong enough to damage nerves and muscles. It was probably lying flat having been caught up in your clothes anyway.

It won't have caused any damage being in for 90 mins.

OP seems pretty calm to me, considering someone left a needle stuck in her back! She's pregnant too - a time when you take extra care of your body.

OP I would definately let them know this happened, it's a serious error.

Thanks all.

It already looks ten times better, you can only see the needle hole now so no more redness. I emailed her and she messaged back apologising saying it won't do damage and what to put on it if it didn't go down. I'm not in the UK and here, midwives are independent from the health care system and an absolute nightmare to find. I have an appt on Monday with her again so I can see what she has to say!
