Child passport renewal - confirm parental responsibility

I've applied for DC's passports. Both under 10. Both renewals. Am married to DC's Dad so no court issues etc.

One passport has been approved. But I've had a request for the other DC to prove that I have parental responsibility by sending in a birth certificate. Has anyone had anything similar? Just seems odd given that it's a renewal and the other DC has been approved. All were applied for at the same time along with my own which has already been issued.

Ring and ask them as it could be a mistake?

Chohlin654 · 15/09/2022 19:12

Yes my friend did. It took months of backwards and forwards with the 1 passport. Every possible reason to send it back and forth. Hope you have a faster experience

I had that once when I was raising my DGD. Luckily I had a court order to show them. But when I took her on holiday I was stopped whilst we were coming back into the country and asked to show proof, well I didn’t have it.
So the rather unpleasant official asked me why I was raising her, I was not prepared to say………….in front of DGD………all about DDs heroin habit, and I told him so. Luckily he just let it go.
So OP, if you take your children abroad, always pack any form of proof you may have.

I had this recently. Ex applied for them and I needed to send the BCs . Not an issue. Had one back, just waiting for the other.

CaptainSamCarter · 16/09/2022 10:07

Well I tried calling but they say on the recorded message that staff won't give information out about checks required.

It's just odd because there are no legal, custody issues. DH is father to both children and we're still married. Both DC required a renewal and one has been issued without me needing to send the birth certificate.

I don't want to book our holiday until we've got all the passports back but we're hoping to go in February half term.

Did you ever get to the bottom of this please, @CaptainSamCarter ?

I've had the same issue with one of my children's renewal applications - an email on one of the applications entitled "send proof of parental responsibility". To add to the confusion all the content in the body of the email is about foreign passports and identity documents, and the need to provide translations if they're not in English 🤔

As in your case there are no issues which could possibly result in any extra documentation being needed, as far as I can tell. I am named on the birth certificate, have parental responsibility and am the person making the application.

I've just had the same thing happen and have had to send off one child's birth cert whilst the other child's passport is ready to be sent to me. They must do random checks and requests for extra documents? Very strange as there doesn't appear to be any reason for them needing the birth certificate? Hope it gets sorted soon, so frustrating, especially as I thought it seemed to be such a simple service

CasperGutman · 31/03/2024 16:27

Hopefully it will still be quite quick, @TicklishHam - we had both of ours back within 2-3 weeks despite the extra documentation demanded and rather poor communication.

This has just happened to us.

Thankfully I read another post on here advising to send all passports for renewal in the same envelope so that saved a fair few quid on special delivery.

But oddly, my eldest's was meant to go to a different processing address to the rest of us. The online guidance says you can send a family application to the same address, so just did that.

Surprise, theirs is the one that's triggered this email saying they need to see proof of parental responsibility. I'm on the birth certificate so I can send it, but as others have asked, no obvious reason it's flagged for one child and not the other. A waste of another £9 for special delivery to exactly the same address I sent everything else to already. If it was needed why didn't they ask for it at the same time as the old passport?

T-30 days until we fly. The other three have been approved tonight to be printed, I'm a bit nervy about this one and we're heading into a bank holiday again.
