The same old people...

Just an observation on people I know (real life and social media). Curious as to whether others are experiencing the same?

The ones saying that we should get rid of the undemocratic, unelected monarchy (a few saying by referendum though most have said nothing as a mechanism) are the same ones I know, without exception, still refusing at accept the results of the Brexit referendum...not sure if they are guilty of mere irony or absolute hypocrisy.

(I've always been pro-monarchy and as ex-forces secure an oath of allegiance to Her Majesty, her heirs and successors years ago that I've never had cause to regret.)

Swore, not secure.

Why is it hypocritical?

I think there should be a referendum on the monarchy and I think Brexit was a massive mistake.

If you object to people not accepting the outcome of the brexit referendum then you have misunderstood how referendums should work. The brexit referendum result was far too close to have been used as the basis for a monumental social and economic change for the entire country. 48% of voters voted to remain so we have ignored the voice of nearly half. Even Nigel Farage said he wouldn’t accept the result if it was very close (clearly he said this before the results were announced).

Similarly, if there was a referendum on the monarchy and 48% said we should keep them then I would never push for the removal of the monarchy as the result would not be reflective of a significant majority.

OperaStation nailed it in the first response

itsnotmeitsdefinitelyyou · 14/09/2022 14:24

So you know a few people who think that...and?

I didn't vote for Brexit, I do accept the democratic way in which the country as a whole voted for it - doesn't mean I have to like it!
and I don't wish to abolish the monarchy nor have a referendum on their continuing existence.

See, other views do exist.

Desmorelda · 14/09/2022 14:28

So what are you saying then ?
Faceless corrupt bureaucrats in Brussels v corrupt mates from the UK - not sure which is worse. At least the faceless EU ones could be voted out…in the Uk they can essentially do what they want.

Underanothersky · 14/09/2022 14:30

What do you mean by "refusing to accept"? Are they pretending it didn't happen or are they just really angry about it?

Damnloginpopup · 14/09/2022 14:34

Of course other views exist. Good responses too. Like I said I'm just curious about them stating a conflicting opinion on democracy and it always being the same people.

Demanding the results of the Brexit referendum be overturned. From day 1. So ignoring a democratic 'vote'. Now saying the monarchy should be abolished because they aren't voted for.

A referendum is not legally binding, so we could have had, and in my opinion should have had, further discussion. As it turns out, it’s left us in a complete and utter mess.
Politically, Putin has used the slow break up of Europe as a means to try to gain power. Economically, we are struggling and whilst there are a number of factors, Brexit is not insignificant.
As for the Monarchy, I’m a citizen, not a subject.

Palmfrond · 14/09/2022 15:06

I’m a massive eurosceptic but I still feel that brexit was/is a dog’s dinner, which in case you haven’t noticed is still a big problem, not least of all because of that, errr, how you say in English, 300km LAND BORDER WITH THE EU!! that nobody thought to mention.
And I’m not against a monarchy, but with the Queen gone, come on, seriously, these guys? A bunch of free loading cone heads best suited to the pages of HELLO! magazine.

MiseryWIthAStent · 14/09/2022 15:14

I accept and do not bring up brexit, I agree mumsnet brings it up a lot(more than anyone I know in real life) but I think we should get rid of the monarchy.

I want to get rid of the Monarchy (if such were democratically voted for) or at least massively reduce the cost and I completely accept the result of the referrendum.

In fact I've not heard of anyone saying we shouldn't overturn the referrendum result, but then I deliberately avoid loons on SM.

I think this is a case of you seeing what you expect to see.

donquixotedelamancha · 14/09/2022 15:28

We had a lot of discussion. The problem (as well as a referrendum being a blunt instrument to decide a complex issue) is that both major parties had elected utter idiots as leaders, who were completely unwilling to compromise.

So we had a terrible settlement and a parliament unable to reach any kind of decision but there was no choice about going ahead because the democractic decision had been made.

I stopped paying any heed to the views of other people years ago, especially when those views do not coincide with mine, and I suggest you do the same.

It is quite liberating.🙂

*Should, obviously.

Are you an MP?

antelopevalley · 14/09/2022 15:30

Brexit was a massive mistake but it is too late to reverse it at least for a number of years.
We need to abolish the monarchy.
