And before anyone asks, yes I have googled this first....

So I am mid 30s, what I am struggling to remember is was there a time you couldn't buy alcohol before 11am?? Like the supermarkets had shutters down etc?

Or am I completely making this up? 🤔

Yes! I remember it being a thing too!

But, a couple of years ago, I was buying a last couple of birthday things for someone & figured I may as well buy the bottle of wine I wanted while I was out and about (it was early!) & I got a very funny look when I asked if I could actually buy it at that time 🤷‍♀️

Lol I know the feeling... probably 5 years ago, rushing to buy a donation for primary school tombola, feeling super awkward buying a bottle of red in the Co-op at half 7 in the morning 😬

I thought you still couldn't buy it before 10am? I'm sure you can't, my local shop has the shutters down in the morning.

Just googled, that's the rule in Scotland but they changed the law on England and Wales in 2003.

🤣 yep, I've been the one who's had to drop something in to the office later on, before!

Ahhh, I was in Scotland a few years back, and think I remember the shutters....

I think you also couldn't buy it after a certain time at night either. Though, possibly I was going to Tesco after work, at midnight and technically it was morning, so maybe that was why.

When I lived in London we used to go to the local kebab shop "after hours" and get the Special. This was a can of beer wrapped up to look like a kebab.

The offies closed at 11 (possibly 12) and there was no such thing as 24hr supermarket shopping.

abovedecknotbelow · 14/09/2022 16:30

You can buy it any time here, I was in Scotland recently on a work thing and we couldn't buy wine for the hotel at 2230

Deathraystare · 15/09/2022 16:37

Oh yes, I remember the not before 11am thing.

When I do an early shift and got to the 24hours shop to get a sarnie, I am very judgemental at the people coming in for 'tinnies' and bottles of alcohol at 6am!!!

I don't know about 11am, but I'm sure the alcohol aisle was closed when supermarkets first started opening on Sundays. Maybe it was before 11am on Sundays?

Levellingdown · 15/09/2022 16:46

@Anamechangeisasgoodasarest yes! Beer from the kebab shop. I forgot that was a thing

Perihelion · 15/09/2022 17:04

It's 10am to 10pm to buy alcohol from a shop in Scotland. Up until 1994 you couldn't buy it on a Sunday.
