Apps to log salary?

Posting here for traffic!
I've just gone back to work after being a SAHM for the past 5 years. I'm doing some part time work in a local cafe and it's cash in hand so need to sort my own taxes and NI contributions.
I'm looking for an app where I can log the hours I've done and how much I got paid for each shift.
Hopefully there'll be one that adds up what I've earned each month as well.

Does such an app exist?

Hmm, are you self employed? If you are, you should be issuing invoices and will have a record of when they are paid which you can then do your self-assessment and you can set yourself up as a sole trader and pay NI. If you are just being paid cash in hand as an employee but not through PAYE, that sounds massively dodgy and no legitimate business would do that. I’d personally steer well clear.

But to answer your question if you’re really keen to keep the job, just use a spreadsheet (excel) or notes on your phone. This is what I do to keep track of what I need to invoice.

It's not possible to be a self employed cafe worker, sadly you are being exploited.

I suppose you could register as self employed with HMRC in any case.

Would I be able to do my own taxes if I'm not classed as self employed?

No, you can't do your own taxes unless registered, they are exploiting you and potentially breaking the law.

You really should rethink this, they sound completely dodgy.

carefullycourageous · 14/09/2022 00:13

I think I should have left out the word 'potentially' as I do not see how you can legally be a self-employed cafe worker.

Tax is still payable, even if the situation is below par.
