On a 4 lane stretch, are lorries allowed in the 3rd one?

Yes - just not in the right hand lane if an HGV.

I was wondering this as I was trying to distance myself from a artic on the M4. It pulled out in front of one car then a few minutes later pulled into my lane meaning I had to straddle both lanes while my car fishtailed as I had to pull away from it at speed in a split second. I told my ds we would be safe in the outside lane ( semi heavy traffic at the time) but they then pulled into the outside lane. I wish I had a dash cam.

I was wondering because this stretch of the M1 is effectively now a one lane road because lorries are across 3 lanes doing about 50 up a looooong hill
