Please help me toddler proof my child's bedroom

My son is 17 months old.

He currently sleeps in a cot in his own room, and the room also contains a chest of drawers, an Ikea billy bookcase, a standalone changing table and an armchair.

We want to replace the chest of drawers and bookcase with new ones and get rid of the changing table. We need the room to be safe and toddler proof before we transition my son to a toddler bed.

Ideally I want to buy everything from Ikea. I'm thinking of a row of Ikea kallax shelves with baskets for his toys on the bottom row and books on the top row so he can reach everything. We want to get a better chest of drawers. Bonus points for one which is 50cm deep so we can put the bumbo changing mat on top of it, but not a deal breaker if not.

Please give me your furnishing and safety tips. I am a bit crap at this stuff.

What do I need to do safety wise?

Any particular furniture you think is good/bad?

What worked well in your kids' rooms and what do you regret?

Thanks!

PS - we are expecting baby no.2 in January when my son will be 21 months old and will probably try to put them in the same room a year later when they are 1 and almost 3, so I want to leave as much free floor space as possible and keep it quite minimal.

Just make sure all furniture is secured to the wall. We also put drawer catches on, not so much for safety but to stop everything being pulled out by DS.

The plug covers that cover the entire double socket are also good, you can keep things plugged in but not accessible to LO. The ones that go in the socket are not recommended as they actually make it more dangerous.

Make sure they can't access the nappy bin!
