Hate hate HATE making phone calls!

I have £150 to spend on salon treatments. I have a newish baby so would really enjoy the pampering. It runs out in December so I need to act fast BUT I cannot make myself phone up. I just hate talking on the phone so much. Anyone else the same?

I'm not too bad with booking appointments (apart from the GP) but I hate calling people I know who may want to chat (god forbid) or companies who try to upsell. I do as much via text, email or online booking as I can.

Annasgirl · 12/09/2022 11:03

Can you not book online? I book hair, nails etc online

Sammysquiz · 12/09/2022 11:03

Ha, me too! I’d rather drive to the salon, walk in and make the appointment, then drive home. I’m actually quite confident, it’s just something about making phone calls.

MyNoseIsCold · 12/09/2022 11:04

I’m terrible at it. I either book online or get my dh to call. My hairdresser knows I’ll just fall off the planet, if she doesn’t put me in the book before I leave the salon.

Sparklingbrook · 12/09/2022 11:05

Can you not email or text and book? That’s how I do it with my treatments?

I am fine making and receiving phone calls, been doing it for work for years, I think I’m immune now. 😂 My young adult DC though would do anything to avoid speaking on the phone though, I think it’s quite common.

Clymene · 12/09/2022 11:05

It's taken me 3 days to make some phone calls. I do them all in one go. Once I start it's not too bad but the thought of it brings me out in a sweat. God knows why - I'm not shy or introverted. I just hate talking on the phone.

Go on - call them. You'll feel so much better!

TigerRag · 12/09/2022 11:06

Can you book them online? I did used to also book mine via FB messenger.

I too hate phone calls. My GP surgery call me despite requesting not to. It's not "convenient" for them to contact me in other ways despite knowing full well that I have hearing problems.

Any salespeople reading this - please PLEASE take note. I am interested in your sale, but I want to sit down with your email and a cuppa before I get back to you.

I think most salespeople don't realise that not all people are trying to fob you off by asking you to email. They just generally don't enjoy being "persuaded" in a call. You miss out on a huge chunk of potential sales by dismissing people like that.

I especially hate it when you use the email form on a website THAT IS RIGHT NEXT TO THE PHONE NUMBER and get a call back. If I wanted to call you, the option was right there, and I didn't choose it.

CampRedLeaf · 12/09/2022 11:09

I also hate it and purposely use companies who have online booking. I have a particular accent and hate that people can't understand me but aren't polite enough to ask me to repeat something. I'd prefer if someone asked me to repeat myself than just guess what I've said!

I actually did a job for 3 years that involved being on the phone all of the time. I didn't mind it. I think it was because I was the one 'in control' of the situation then. And it was a job where I could be very to the point didn't need to worry about offending something. People laugh at me now though, knowing that I did that job but I still tie myself in knots about phoning the dentist.

It's actually a well known sales technique. They don't want you to think about it, check the details or read the small print. They sent you to sign up and spend your money before you can get out of it.

I only make a call if I really have to. My mental illness makes it difficult to make calls. I become extremely anxious.

fhe274 · 12/09/2022 11:14

Yes, this is me! Have been like this all my life and can't see things changing. I'm just glad that these days most things can be done online. I'll always choose companies that offer online contact over those I'd have to phone.

eurochick · 12/09/2022 11:16

I'm the same. I absolutely hate making phone calls. I would much rather do it online or even in person.

EllieRosesMammy · 12/09/2022 11:18

Me too! I'd honestly rather go in somewhere and make an app, than make a quick phone call😂 I get such bad anxiety and I'm not sure if it's cause I spent my childhood with a lisp so people had trouble understanding me/bullied me, so now I've got a complex about talking to people unless it's face to face 😭

EndTheMonacyNow · 12/09/2022 11:21

Send an email instead. I'm very comfortable phoning people but I prefer online chat if I have a choice

Deathraystare · 15/09/2022 17:27

Decades ago, before starting work I would have hated it. But several reception/secretarial jobs later, I am ok. Probably better on the phone than email/texts.

It immediately puts me off whatever the product is - and that’s assuming I answer the call in the first place.

ALongHardWinter · 15/09/2022 18:26

No advice to offer but I do sympathise as I'm the same. I'm so glad that you can often book things online nowadays. I absolutely hate phoning to make appointments. I think my problem stems from the fact that just know that they're going to keep offering me ones that aren't suitable and they'll end up thinking I'm being awkward!

ChipsRoastOrBoiled · 15/09/2022 18:29

I'm so relieved to hear I'm not the only one!

I hate speaking on the phone. I'll email, book online or instant message instead. I feel so self conscious and get all my words & thoughts muddled.
