Will teachers still need to work, can anyone confirm?

My son's in an independent special school and they are closing.

The DfE has said schools will close. I would not be surprised though if some provisions/special schools ask for staff to volunteer to cover for families who need it. No word from my HT yet, but I am expecting to be asked (mainstream provision).

I imagine you will find out tomorrow. My hunch would be that they will close.

I imagine they will tell you tomorrow. As it was only annouced yesterday on a Saturday they probably haven't had a chance to communicate it yet but the general advice is schools are to close.

Dfe has said in an email to schools and colleges

"The official date of the state funeral is 19th September 2022. This day will be a bank holiday and settings that are normally closed on bank holiday should close on this day as a mark of respect. This will include schools and colleges."

(From schools week online)

Asking staff to work overtime on a voluntary basis sets a precedent then for a childcare provision to made on other bank holidays. Would people then say they need schools to be open all through the holidays, over the weekend or later in the evening? Where would it end?

Schools don't open on bank holidays.

No that's silly. People normally know when bank holidays are way in advance so can make plans. We've only had just over a week's notice.

Do you have more than a week's notice if your child is sick, or if the school is closed due to extreme weather? No you don't so just just suck it up and deal with it.

Why on Earth will teachers still need to work when everyone else is on bank holiday?

Why should it even be considered that they are not part of the bank holiday?😯

Shinyandnew1 · 11/09/2022 20:58

No, they will be closed.
