Dark green in west facing room

Had enough of light airy colours, and fancy a change.

Have a forest green sofa, want to embrace a dark cosy feel, but what would work well in a west facing room, with quite a lot of light?

I know that the light can alter the colour.

Will start getting dark earlier and earlier, so happy with curtains closed etc, but wondered about the colours during the day.

TIA

I’ve just painted our north facing sitting room dark green to max the coziness. It does get some good light in a morning though and I think the green works really well.

second pic is mid-decorating so furniture all over the place.

There will be people who completely love it and encourage you to go with it but I painted the two largest walls of my East facing living room a dark green (with the two smaller walls in cream and aubergine curtains) and had to go lighter within a couple of years as I just found it so terribly depressing. Interestingly I had used wallpaper which had the same base colour with lighter shades years before for all 4 walls of a dining room, so overall it was much darker) and completely loved it so perhaps it depends on how much time you will spend there.

Love that colour crikey

I think that it will be a bit too olive for our sofa though, it’s the French connection studio in forest green.

Foxfeeder I’m not too worried if we don’t end up liking it, as DP is a painter and decorator, I’ve said to him what if we don’t end up liking it, won’t it be a pain to paint over etc, and he said it will be fine, if we don’t like it we’ll repaint down the line.

I’m having images of cosy nights with hot chocolates watching movies with rich green walls, bronze ambient lighting etc

We have obsidian green by little greene in our living room - it's absolutely gorgeous and would recommend

Do you get a lot of light in room?

I’m just wondering how the dark looks against natural sunlight, does it make it look dark/gloomy in a way that it doesn’t when you have the curtains closed/lamps on?

We have goblin by little greene on 3 wall in our living room. The light really does change the colour beautifully so it isnt gloomy in the day but super cosy at night. We tried a million testers of cheaper paint and couldn't find anything that came close.

I have Kensington(or is it Knightsbridge?) Green by Annie Sloan in my conservatory. It's a very light room obviously, west-facing: it looks better at dusk/evening. It's a kind of deep emeraldy green.

I'm not so olive but I have Arsenic by Little Greene in my west facing living room and I love it

@PicturesOfDogs we do get a fair amount but even on a dark day / in winter, it seems to work very well as a beautiful gothic colour rather than just absorbing light. Id really recommend getting samples and putting them on the wall. My FIL is a painter and was convinced he could use a copycat colour mixed - but when we put them side by side we saw that the LG colour had a different depth that the mix couldn't replicate. Tried to attach a photo but not sure it's worked

Our west facing sitting room was dark green for a couple of years, then I realised I found it too dark. It was a bugger to paint over, but it's an off white colour now and I much prefer it.

User65412 · 11/09/2022 21:13

Do you spend much of the daytime in the room? Our living room is studio green but we only sit in there in the evening. Its n/w facing though so quite dark anyway.
I still like it if I'm home in the day and the sun shines in. I have bright yellow bits in there to lighten it up. Also if your ceilings are high enough, bringing the lighter ceiling colour down a bit of the wall really helps.
I love our green room!

I have a dark green wall in my living room, gold accessories. It's lovely.

We have a west facing room in Duck Green. It's lovely in all lights, and doesn't feel gloomy in the sun. It's dark, but a rich colour.

We painted our main sitting room wall the Christmas Wreath colour trend colour and other walls a nice cream. It's our feature wall and I love it. We have a brown sofa and gold accessories. We done it in March and it's not dark or enclosing at all. I painted the wooden furniture the same colour with white colour paintings on the wall.

Our living room is Green Smoke by F&B with a navy sofa and bright orange armchair. The accents are pink and gold. Sound odd but it work, it’s a moody room at night and surprisingly bright during the day.
