How many kWh of electric per day.. family of 4.

Family of 4, 2 adults, 2 kids. Both kids have sen and nearly always someone at home.

we had a smart meter fitted not too long ago after a long time of not really thinking about what energy we are using. We have gas boiler for central heating and water, everything else electric. We cannot get gas readings to work on smart meter so only looking at electric at the minute.

Dp worked out on average we've used 13 kWh per day over the last 6 months. Is that good or bad? Bad?!

since our smart meter we've been a bit more cautious and it's been about 10-11kwh, not a huge drop but a drop. The weathers been pretty dry so I've been drying indoors rather than dryer.

laundry is a big factor. We have a lot of laundry which is impossible to get down. Washing machine on at least once daily. Tumble dryer used when it's raining, I have an airer too for things too thick or they will shrink in the dryer. Both washer and dryer are newish models that should be more energy efficient.

big factor is also electronics. Nearly always a tv on or a device being charged as well as an Xbox might have an hour or two use each day.

as well as things like vacuuming and my steam mop!

we turn things off when not in used.

Dp boils the kettle a lot as he is a tea addict but he's been only boiling what he needs rather than overfilling.

we've just got a new oven (built in) which I hope will hope. Our old one took forever to heat up, needed to be cranked up high too cook and was not a fan oven. Hoping our new one is more energy efficient. We also have an air fryer but aren't noticing a big difference between that and oven so far.

our hob uses a lot of energy when used, that too takes ages to heat up too! I'm not sure if the cost of a new one will be worth it, will a newer one be more energy efficient??

We are between 5 and 11 a day. The lower amount is when I've not had tumble dryer or washing machine on. Higher amount when I've done a few loads.
We do use cooker a lot.

If we're talking electric, ot was 4kw a day in August. Mainly two of us.

Thirder · 10/09/2022 20:53

Family of 4, with small kids. Was using average of 8.5kw daily units. Now around 13kw since we got an electric car for main commute.
I am planning to rejoin gym for the winter which I hope will replace some of our expensive electric showers.
Hardly ever use oven, replaced with air fryer.
Drier is banned in our house now.
Trying not to be wasteful. Making sure toaster is full instead of one slice at a time, turning off socket switches all the time.

This is interesting. We are on 15.73 so far today. I haven't run the washing or the tumble dryer today - wtf?

Savingpeoplehuntingthings · 10/09/2022 21:00

I thought we did ok but it's anything between 11 + 15 so maybe not as good as I thought.

Around 5kw a day.

My IHD for the smart meter is no longer connecting and EDF don’t care, so I’ve downloaded the Hugo app and it shows my daily use broken down into hours. I know more or less when I’m using what so it’s easy to see what is using the power.

By far the biggest users of power will be anything that has a heating element, followed by your fridge/freezer.

I have an under counter fridge as well as a fridge-freezer and I stopped using the little fridge and my usage has gone down noticeably.

Not using the tumble drier at all if I can help it. Washing clothes on 30, and dishwasher has to be full to run it.

We're on 8kwh so far. I've done 1 full wash and a 30min wash, and the oven has been on for about 30mins. We use the power shower rather than the electric one, but apart from that, kettles been in a few times, stuff in charge etc.

About 14 per day here. 2 adults 2 kids but no one here in the day. Do have a hybrid car though but have oil for heating water

Fileexplorerrrr · 10/09/2022 21:26

Ours is between 9-10 kWh each day!

2 adults & 1 teenager in a 4 bed, large roomed house. Both adults working from home and every gadget you could think off.

Showers every day and we cook from scratch most nights and have a dishwasher. The only thing we don’t use is the tumble dryer.

We also create A LOT of washing (6/7 loads exc bedding & towels) which I usually do over a weekend. Is that cheaper?!

I thought our family would be high users but apparently not which surprises me.

Average 11kwh electric a day don’t have a smart meter so had to take a whole months worth and just divide. 2 adults, 1 teen and 2 younger. We are all electric apart from heating/hot water.

Wowzel · 10/09/2022 21:37

Looks like we used anywhere between 10 and 25 a day depending on the amount of washing and tumble drier being used
