Where can I buy a globe in Yorkshire/Manchester please?

Hi, DS (14) wants to buy a "grown up globe" with his birthday money, and would like to look at a few first. He particularly wants to be sure that it shows South Susan , which is hard to check online.

We live in Huddersfield-ish, so pretty central for Leeds, Bradford, Sheffield, York, Manchester etc. Can anyone recommend anywhere we could look at a selection of globes in this places please?

Was it obvious? I thought it was an island somewhere that I was ignorant of 🤣

As South Sudan has been recognised for a decade, I should think most stock - if not buying vintage - would show it.

I think the internet has probably killed off shops that have wide range of globes though. Good luck in your search! Otherwise, I’d narrow down from an online store that has free returns. Easy to check South Sudan from product photos and if necessary, emailing.

Do globe manufacturers not include S Sudan as standard now? Online retailers with lots of photos of their products are a good starting point:

Big bookshops often sell globes, maybe ring up a Waterstones?

HappyHamsters · 10/09/2022 12:57

John Lewis £40

Viviennemary · 10/09/2022 12:57

John Lewis have them.

You have Waterstones in kingsgate, or rymans on new street, there was a shop in kinsgate a while ago that sold gadgets and gifts,, if they’re still there? ( Huddersfield)

John Lewis in either Leeds Trinity or the Trafford Centre.
I bought a beautiful antique-style one from there for about £60

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 10/09/2022 13:07

Thank you.

I agree that S Sudan will be on all new globes, but I am having trouble convincing DS!!

We've spent hours scouting the Just Globes and Stanford's websites, but none of the photos we've looked at are orientated to show SS.

DS would also like to actually buy something, with cash he's got, and bring it home the same day. Rather than giving me the cash and waiting a few days for something he's never actually laid hands on.

John Lewis is a good call, although our nearest (Leeds) has only ever struck me as being style over substance. It looks like a pineapple and is full of high end clothes and nothing useful. Is the Trafford Centre one any better?

Waterstones is a good shout. Huge one in Meadowhall.

And Leeds actually. Looks like I may be going to Leeds tommorow for Waterstones and JL. bring back Cole Brothers

Actually that one is ideal and shows SS.

I've seen some beautiful globes in Homesense on several occasions. Definitely worth a look.

Isseywith3witchycats · 10/09/2022 14:04

this is going to sound like blatant advertising but i have a gemstone globe on ebay for Yorkshire Cat Rescue at the moment Small Vintage Style Gemstone Globe with Brass Casing at 324.99 which ends on sunday night and am based in Halifax

Isseywith3witchycats · 10/09/2022 14:04

Really? I took a screenshot for my reply earlier but didn’t post it (I commented instead about check by email) and literally the first one I looked at on Just Globes showed it!

In fact, nearly everything on the first landing page for desk globes shows Africa as first image. I totally get that he wants to go out proper shopping… but hopefully that’ll reassure you that it seems pretty standard to include South Sudan! So I hope he sees something he likes 👍🏻

Wish my children wanted Globes and not crop tops 😭

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 10/09/2022 15:53

Testina - , I'm embarrassed now. I was trusting a 13 year old to do something properly. 🙄.

We now also need to be sure it says Czechia. But since the Czech Republic has been known as Czechia for 5 years, that also shouldn't be a problem, but DS would still like to go and spend cash in a physical shop. Dunelm seems to have them too.

@Isseywith3witchycats, I've found it, it's very nice, but not quite what ds has in mind.
