Chinese Salt and Pepper Chips

I am so disappointed.

Ive had the preconception that chinese chips are not worth buying from the because its just chips and what a waste of calories and money. So i've never had Chinese salt and pepper chips but MN would always rave how delicious they are. Extra crunchy and laced with and crack if I remember rightly. So after weeks of wanting a Chinese and our only takeaway for 20 miles has been shut for a month we got a long awaited Chinese and I splashed out and got some salt and pepper chips.

They're just bog standard Weatherspoon style soggy chips with chilli flakes with fried onions. Is my Chinese rubbish or are they supposed to be like that? Not even a dunk in the sweet n sour sauce would make them taste any better.

They’re nothing special, in my experience. I prefer the regular ones.

They're hit or miss, depending on the Chinese. If they're done right they are amazing (and should always be dunked in curry sauce!)

Your Chinese is rubbish. My local ones are to die for

The ones from our local takeaway are delicious. The flavour is similar to Walkers Sensations Thai Sweet Chilli but hotter.

I tried to recreate them at home, but they didn't taste right.

The good ones will have the exact same ingredients as old fashioned chip spice: salt, pepper, chilli, garlic, onion and MSG

So you can just buy or make chip spice

Home Bargains do an amazing Chinese salt and pepper spice thing. You just shake it over chips and it tastes really good.

I have had them on recommendation here. The chips were ok in themselves but they had slices of red chilli, salt, and sliced spring onions iirc.

Home made chips are really nice with salt and togarashi spice
