Does anyone know which era we're now in?

Wikipedia says:

Charles I - Caroline or Carolinian
Charles II - Carolean
Charlemagne - Carolingian

Is it one of these or something different/new?

You can probably take your pick but out of those I'd go with Caroline.

Maireas · 08/09/2022 22:52

Carolingian

Good question

mynameiscalypso · 08/09/2022 22:57

I have just realised this minute that eras are called after the significant monarch of the time...Georgian, Edwardian, Victorian. It was one of those things that I knew but didn't really fully think about. It feels odd to call the past 70-off years the Elizabethan era.

Anotherdopeytaxpayer · 08/09/2022 22:57

We had "William & Mary", so why not "Chucky & Cammie" ?

ThomasinaGallico · 08/09/2022 23:00

Gives a whole new meaning to Sweet Caroline.

Joking apart, not every era is named after its monarch, and I don’t think this one will be. Even the whole New Elizabethan thing always struck me as more a marketing slogan than a convincing description of a period of history.

fairydust11 · 08/09/2022 23:00

I’ve read it’s apparently the - Carolean era

Applebark · 08/09/2022 23:02

Charleston 🕺‍

Thegrowlery · 09/09/2022 02:13

I had this conversation with my 16yo earlier. We're not exactly hot on history ourselves but obvs we know that Victoria=Victorian, Elizabeth=Elizabethan, Edward=Edwardian... but Henry=Tudor? So that makes no sense.

After a brief discussion we decided that Charles=Charleston and we're all going to wear flapper dresses and dance maniacally to jazz music for the foreseeable future 👯‍♀️

The Charlatan Era

😁

crumpet · 09/09/2022 03:35

It won’t be defined( if at all) for a while yet will it? The Queen’s father, Grandfather and Great Grandfather aren’t defined by eras

Bloodyusernamechangefailagain · 09/09/2022 03:48

The first 2 Charles' were Stuarts dynasty, so I guess we continue now with Windsors. Or Carolean if discussing Charles III in particular?

EarringsandLipstick · 09/09/2022 03:53

There's no 'era' until he's been a monarch for a notable period of time.

freckles20 · 09/09/2022 04:29

It is the era of overt displays of mourning and accusations about lack of respect to anyone deemed not to be properly mourning.
