If it was real life and we were just peering in at a snapshot of it do you think Hyacinth and Richard were happy and she just went over the top sometimes? Or do you think Richard and Elizabeth were secretly at it?

Rewatching it all now on Prime just wondering

I reckon these days, you'd see it and you'd think Richard is a victim of constant emotional abuse.
I remember thinking it when I watched it 20+ years ago.

That aside though, I reckon he and the extrovert sister would have been at it... Richard was very quiet.. bet he liked her in some leather really. 🤪

MintyGreenDreams · 08/09/2022 20:28

@MoistBandana 🤣 never thought about him with Rose.

Actually thinking about it I think in one of the later episodes hes asks about how he puts up with her and he explains it in a very sweet poignant way.He has her back even though she's a nightmare.

I always thought Richard had the hots for Daisy!

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 08/09/2022 20:32

He was secretly gay. She was his beard.

Also, it was him who chose the tea cups with the hand painted periwinkles.

LadyEloise1 · 08/09/2022 20:41

She set her sights on him.
That was it.
He didn't stand a chance.

My grannie and Granda, both long long deceased, were exactly the same . I cant watch hyacinth much as its just like seeing my grannie . Grannie was convinced she was of very high social status .. not so at all . She would stroll around the house singing, only fed her cats fresh fish or chicken that she cooked herself, insisted on ringing a dinner bell, dressing for dinner, very occasional takeaways were served only after a soup course and on china plates . Went to bed in a floor length pink nightie, hair net, hat and all sorts.

Granda spent his life hiding in the garden, a very silent but smiley man ... he barely said a word .

I do think they (and Hyacinth and Richard by extension!) were happy .

I really felt for Hyacinth
She was over the top as a reaction to her family, who I felt were treated with more sympathy by the writers/audience. In her shoes I would have found them embarrassing too but she didn’t go NC with them and did still see them as her family. They were comedy figures but some of their behaviour was actually quite awful.
I also thought that a lot of people were quite nasty to her, especially the way she was mocked at Church behind her back (not very Christian). Plus her beloved son only contacted her to ask for money.
I felt Richard really understood and loved her

I may have given this too much thought I know

I loved her conversations with Sheridan Grin and his 'friend' Tarquin .

Sally99 · 08/09/2022 21:04

I can't imagine Richard fancying anything other than a peaceful shed at the bottom of the garden

GoodVibesHere · 08/09/2022 21:06

I suppose a bit like Basil Fawlty and Sybil, he loved her really.

MintyGreenDreams · 08/09/2022 21:09

@Hoppinggreen I think you're spot on

Yes. Same here. She was very embarrassed about her family but at least she still saw them and they all rallied around at times of trouble ("Daddy" getting loose!).

Some guys love a bossy woman - possibly like their own mother!!!

picklemewalnuts · 15/09/2022 18:06

This was my parents. I can't watch it. I understand where Hyacinth comes from, but it doesn't make it any easier.

Mind, DM has a nasty edge and a short memory, so not as kind as Hyacinth.

if I remember correctly Hyacinth is actually a really kind, helpful person around the edge of her obsession with appearances. But as I say, I can't watch it so may be wrong!
