New washing machine making clothes smell

As thread title. I got a new washing machine. Did the empty hot cycle as the instructions said. Then tried washing clothes on eco setting. They all came out smelling like when you leave wet washing sat in a heap for days. Tried various other cycles. They all smell the same more or less. I'm getting embarrassed of us all smelling foisty. What do I do?

Make sure the hose to drain the machine is fitted into the pipe to the external drain properly in case stale water is being left in the machine & causing the issue.
