Can you hear birds?

It occurred to me this morning that there was no morning chorus. It wasn't raining.

There have been many many dead birds where I live (SW) but we only hear about the sea birds.

Can you hear birds where you are? Is it not a time of year for normal garden birds?

Birds don't really need to sing at the moment - breeding season is over so they don't need to attract a mate. A lot of the birds we hear in spring have migrated south by now.

YesitsBess · 08/09/2022 14:53

I will at around 4pm when an entire flock of sparrows take up their positions in the hedge for the pre-evening yelling session.

FlibbertyGiblets · 08/09/2022 14:54

The ones that remain all year round are coming to the end of their summer moult, where they stay hidden and quiet until their new feathers are through. The robins for eg will be lustily singing again by next week <nods>

They're all around my house Grin I was thinking earlier how it sounded like spring.

There was a birdwatching book in the holiday cottage we rented last week.
How did I get to my 60s before knowing that blackbirds lose, and replace, all their feathers each year?

Mindblowing!

Blackbird moulting

BobMortimersPocketMeat · 08/09/2022 15:42

No, today’s the day their batteries get changed. I’m only about half way through ours and it keeps raining.

ArtyChoc · 08/09/2022 15:43

Yes, the front door is ajar for the dogs and I can hear various things singing.

Travis1 · 08/09/2022 15:44

Windows are closed so |I can't hear them but the crows and magpies or up on the hill as normal and the wee squirrel has just been in robbing the bird feeder next door 😹

bloodywhitecat · 08/09/2022 15:45

Yes, last night it was a tawny owl and right now it is various small birds and one of the chickens singing her egg song.

SBAM · 08/09/2022 15:46

I often hear the parakeets when I’m on the school run, and the magpies are sometimes noisy but the little garden birds are quite quiet at the minute. Still plenty in my garden, they’re just not making much noise.

theemmadilemma · 08/09/2022 15:47

Yes, some screechy fucker at night atm which sets my dogs off.

Ilovelindor · 08/09/2022 15:48

Where I live there are always flocks of geese squawking away in the mornings and evenings.

BaronessBomburst · 08/09/2022 15:49

I can hear wood pidgeons, a cockerel, squabbling sparrows, and a startled blackbird.
Not much else at this time of year.

HebeSunshine · 08/09/2022 15:51

I can hear a magpie squawking out the back and later we’ll have the gang of starlings noisily devouring the fat balls out the front.

RebulahConundrum · 08/09/2022 16:13

@theemmadilemma That's probably a tawny owl

KangarooKenny · 08/09/2022 16:24

I heard geese flying over two nights ago. A sure sign that winter is coming or going.

BobaTeaPoops · 08/09/2022 16:26

Yeah not shutting up outside my living room window currently.

You need to read the thread on Cunting Pigeons from a few years back!

MintJulia · 08/09/2022 16:42

Yes. Plus deer barking, owls calling and cockerels crowing while it's dark.

This morning there was an arrowhead of about 20 geese flying around honking. They are getting ready to fly south. We still have swallows but they are lining up on the telephone wires. Won't be long before they all migrate.

WeAreTheHeroes · 08/09/2022 16:44

Yes - lots of different ones including blackbirds, buzzards, owls.

RiftGibbon · 08/09/2022 16:49

Yes, the bloody randy pigeons on my roof going on and on all day.

IncessantNameChanger · 08/09/2022 16:55

I can't hear anything over the rain. Not heard the owl hooting for a while but I only notice it on very quite nights. Not seen any birds at all recently. Maybe the battery theory is correct?

Can you put some extra charge on the sparrow hawk please? It didn't manage to finish off the jackdoor last time.
