Dh waking to smoke in the middle of the night...

For a while me and Dh have slept in separate rooms. No issues he just likes to fall asleep in the sitting room watching TV and I prefer a bed.

I am currently redecorating my bedroom and have been sleeping in the sitting room too. For the past few nights he has been getting up to have a cigarette and then go back to sleep. You've got to have a serious addiction to get up in the night, 3am ish, and smoke.

He is on 35 and has smoked since a teen. He never used to do this before. Is this normal for a smoker?

I won't wake up just to go for one but if I had woken and couldn't go back to sleep for a while or whatever I would probably go out and have one.

Unless he’s setting an alarm, it sounds like he’s just waking up anyway and having one because he’s up. As someone with insomniac tendencies, I get that.

Agreed.

I'm the same but it's not that often.

housemaus · 08/09/2022 11:37

Yeah, doesn't sound especially weird. I used to smoke, never more than about 5 a day (unless drinking) but if I was struggling to sleep I'd go outside for one.

As a dedicated couch-faller-asleeper there's always a point in the night where I wake up and realise I'm on the sofa and have to move, and then I'm quite awake for a bit. I imagine he's doing the same!

35 a day is a serious addiction in itself so having one when he wakes is normal.

I used to know a woman who set her alarm to do this. She died of lung cancer, way too young. She did smoke absolutely loads though.

Mrsjayy · 08/09/2022 11:40

When I smoked I would occasionally smoke during the night's, I don't think its that unusual.

Think they might have mean't age.

Twilightimmortal · 08/09/2022 12:01

I meant age 35. Wow, ok so this is normal then. I'm quite surprised by that.
