Help Please - are these mosquito or bed bug bites

I’m currently on holiday in Greece and have been bitten several times.

The hotel we are staying in has good reviews but my arm and ankle has been bitten, these are very itchy and red. There are a lot of mosquitoes but I’m worried may be bedbugs even though bites are spread out? I’ve checked mattresses and cannot see any signs of them but now I am paranoid!

Bed bug bites are usually in a line not random

watcherintherye · 08/09/2022 00:16

They look like particularly nasty mosquito bites to me. Do you have any anti-histamine cream or tablets with you?

AchillesLastStand · 08/09/2022 08:29

I don’t think bed bugs either. You would see evidence of them in the bed, tiny spots of blood in the sheets.

I think you'd have a lot more if they were bed bugs or fleas etc.
They look like mosquito bites to me.

Yes, they look like quite standard mosquito bites to me. Get a hot spoon on them to relieve the itch fast, plus antihistamine pills, and bite cream.

FrankGrillosFloof · 08/09/2022 09:34

Nah, bog standard mozzy bites mate.

thing47 · 09/09/2022 14:22

DD2 says she reckons they are mosquito bites – she has a Masters in vector-borne (ie mosquito) diseases. She says she'd need a closer examination to determine which breed of mosquito… 😀

constantindigestion · 09/09/2022 14:23

Definitely mozzy bites

Lilac956 · 09/09/2022 15:55

Thanks all - im hoping just overthinking. There is loads of mosquitos in our room but it’s just that some bites are in a line which is throwing me off! The other person I’m staying with has isolated bites so possibly just a coincidence. Just terrified will bring it home from holiday if it is! I’ve been checking the room like crazy and no sign s which is good

Just be aware that some mosquitos in Greece carry West Nile Fever these days as a result of climate change. So if you start experiencing high fevers or things like seizures, tremors or partial paralysis, best to seek urgent medical help to be on the safe side.

Georgeskitchen · 09/09/2022 16:47

I'm just back from Greece and have these on my legs. Got some anti histamine ointment from pharmacy and it seems to be helping the itching. Hubby and I in a double bed and he hasn't any so probably not bedbugs

wateraddict · 09/09/2022 17:43

Yep, mozzie bites I reckon! Mine all react like this. Get some preventative bug spray for the evenings and slather it on as well as antihistamine cream. I avoid sitting near plants or still water in the evenings, a nice open spot in bar/restaurant may be less likely to provide a good hangout for munching insects. Good luck!

Look like mosquito bites to me too, I used to get eaten alive by then and had to go to chemist on holiday, I was told not to wear anything perfumed and certainly not perfume and it 100% helped.

AmbushedByCake1 · 09/09/2022 19:05

Get some bug spray with deet in it. Cover arms and legs in the evening. Ask the hotel to spray your room to kill any lurking mozzies.

StillMedusa · 10/09/2022 00:13

I have had the unfortunate experience of bedbugs... and the bites don't look like that :)
Bedbug bites are tiny and multiple..and you get tiny blood spots all over the sheets.
Relax :)

notangelinajolie · 10/09/2022 00:49

Look like mozzy bites to me. Buy some spray and make sure you put it on before you go out in the evening.
Also put the air on on and keep windows closed at night.

thing47 · 10/09/2022 09:16

In addition to PP advice, different species of mosquito bite at different times of the day (or night), so if you know when you are getting bitten, you can increase your protection levels at those times.
