Monthly contact lenses question

TopFlatTroubles · 07/09/2022 10:24

I'm new to monthly contacts, I've always either used hard lenses or daily ones.

I put one of my lenses in this morning, but it felt uncomfortable so I took it out and washed it with the solution in the container. Put it back. Took it out again and managed to drop it in the sink. I've put a daily in for today, because I can't clean it and put it back in my eye, but what do I do with the lens I'm not wearing?

Leave it in the container - with or without the cleaning solution? Or with saline?

Should I take the other monthly one out and put them both in to clean?

What should I do if I decide not to wear them for the day? Do I put cleaning solution in now and then empty and replace before bed? Can they stay more than 24hours in the same solution?

Was there water in the sink when you dropped it? Why can’t you clean it and put it back in?

Put it in the container with solution. It will dry out without any.
Up to you if you put 2 dailies in or keep the other monthly in, it will just mean you have one odd daily I suppose.

I leave in the solution if not wearing but then do a clean with new solution and a rub before next putting it in.

Thanks. You need to leave it 6 hours from putting the cleaner on it.

I think that’s really necessary if it just dropped into an empty sink for a few seconds, if it had water in the sink I’d probably dispose of it tbh.

I DON’T think that should say!

Just put them both in the cleaning solution - the 6 hours one is a peroxide cleaner and should easily kill anything nasty on it overnight.

Taking your lenses out if they feel uncomfortable is the right thing to do. If you want to clean your monthly lenses, they will need to be rubbed gently using the tip of your finger and some fresh contact lens solution from the bottle.
I noticed you said that you “washed it with the solution in the container” you should never re-use old solution, it should always be fresh solution.

I noticed you said in another comment that you need to leave the solution for 6 hours, does your solution have a red bottle cap? If so, then you must be using a peroxide solution, in which case the lenses should be left in the solution for 6 hours to disinfect and neutralise before placing the lenses on the eye. You should not use this kind of solution to rinse your lenses. Only multipurpose solution or saline can be used to rinse your lenses.

Always leave your contact lenses in contact lens solution when not in use, doing so will keep them clean and hydrated, you wouldn’t want to put a dry lens in your eye as it will cause a lot of discomfort.

If you decide not to wear your lenses for the day, you can keep them in your lens case filled with solution. With multipurpose solution you can keep your lenses in there for 5 – 7 days. With hydrogen peroxide solution you can keep your lenses in the case filled with solution for 3 – 4 days. If you want to keep your lenses in the case for longer, you will need to throw out the solution and fill the case with more fresh solution.
