Shell Energy and smart meter

I was moved to Shell Energy last October when my energy supplier went bust.

For the last couple of months, I have been receiving calls (I think from a third party) asking me to make an appointment for a smart meter to be fitted. I don't particularly want one, so I asked them to remove my number for their database and to not call me again.

Today I have received an email from Shell telling me that my electric meter is old and now has to be replaced. It will be replaced with a smart meter! and also suggesting that I replace my gas meter at the same time.

I have never had any problems with my electric meter and it feels like a ruse just to get me to have the smart meter. I deleted the email.

Has anyone else had a similar experience please?

The meters have a finite life so do need to be replaced at some point. I had an electric one changed before smart meters existed.

I had a similar message recently but when they tried to replace them it kept tripping my fuse box so they put my dumb ones back again.

I do realise that the current meter is old but it seems such a coincidence that they say it needs replacing after I have refused the smart meter. It's not like anyone has come round and seen it.

It needs replacing after a certain number of years wether someone has looked at it or not. It should have a sticker on it saying when it was installed so you can check how old it is.

I've just checked and ideally should be replaced every 10 years. I dont think they normally bother but they will be looking at changing the old ones to Smart Metres as its in their interest to do so. Ultimately you dont get much say in it as its their property not yours.

Fair enough. I know without looking that it's more than 10 years old.
Thank you

My gas one is more than 20 years old. The electricity one was changed a few years ago. As the smart meter tripped my fuse box they can't change the gas meter as they wanted to as its old.

Maybe it'll be too old to change @dementedpixie <hopeful>
