Working 4 days but being paid for 5? Part time help

I need help/advice wording putting forward an argument/agreement to pay me more money!

Has anyone successfully got their employer to pay them for 4.5 or 5 days salary but only working 4 days?

I have a hugely generous employer so I think they would do this but I need help wording it to them?

I work v hard and they're good to me but I'm always bothered on my day off which I don't hugely mind but I feel penalised being paid a part time salary. I work late into the evenings sometimes just to catch-up.

It's always the case that part time people always work more but I don't know of an eloquent way of saying this!

Any wordsmiths out there that could help with any good reasonings?

Are your hours stated in your contract? You could ask to work compressed hours? If you work on your day off then you adjust the hours on your ‘working days’ down accordingly (or accrue and use as TOIL).

Alternatively say you will work e.g. on your ‘NWD’ and get paid for it.

And/or put stronger boundaries in place. You don’t answer your phone, check email when you’re off. Put your hours and NWD in your signature etc, Speak to your line manager about boundaries so they can support you. Put in place contingencies for the things that regularly come up.

I used to work PT and switched to compressed as I was basically always working 5 days but getting paid for 4!

Rather than say getting paid for 5 days, ask for an increase in your hourly rate. % of your salary.
that way you’re not saying you want to get paid for a non working day, you want to be fairly compensated for your work.

I condensed my 5 day hours into 4 days so I would start at 7am and finish at 6pm but 5:30pm finish on a Thursday. I got paid the same but worked 4 days rather than 5.
Is this something you could put forward to them? It sounds like you work later anyway to complete all the work so may aswell get paid for it.

What is it you want - for them to stop bothering you on your day off, or to increase your hours? It's not clear.

I changed from 4 days to full-time but compressed hours because I always did a bit on my day off and in the evenings. Now at least I get paid for it! I work my hours over 4.5 days but can compress into 4 if I need to.

Devils advocate here- Why should they if you are voluntarily working on your day off ?
Stop working on your day off or working unreasonable hours on your working day. You should only be doing 80% of the work in 80% of the hours for 80% of the pay.
At that point you then ask for more pay or a full time contract compressed over 4 days.

I’d either ask to up your hours and work from home if possible on the day they are normally bothering you or stop working out of hours they can’t pay you full time if your contract isn’t full time

or maybe ask for a pay rise

I think I would say something like:

“My current 4 day arrangement is not working for me because although in theory I work 80% of FT and am paid accordingly, in practice my workload is closer to 100% of FT. This is due to addressing queries on my non working day, and working extra hours on my working days to cover my workload.

I would like to propose the following: I return to a FT position and am paid for FT, but with flexibility so that I am able to work most of my hours across 4 days. I will continue to work longer hours on those 4 days and pick up crucial queries on the 5th day, as I do currently.”

Excellent! I think this is what I'm after!

Sorry I'm all over the shop with what I want to ask for, hence why I need a clear headed person to word it for me!
