Smart meters - please help me understand

We had a smart meter installed by British Gas several years ago and were given a display unit which showed usage etc. It broke and it's been chucked in a cupboard. Would like to have a working one now to see what's using all the electricity but we escaped British Gas years ago and our new company doesn't use smart meters.

Can I buy a random one or ........?

All utility companies install smart meters - they may not supply a display ?

This looks useful - not tried it - an app instead https://loop.homes/what-is-loop/?gclid=Cj0KCQjw39uYBhCLARIsADSzMR0hFLlgCpR3nyPE6CAysGc3UB4uEzYvMpUI2RyAtpBICjRUzgPm60aAs-0EALww_wcB

@catsrus, thanks for that. I started to sign up with Loop...it's a free App however to verify my address they want my credit card details. Not happy with doing that. The only other way to verify my address is via the home display unit - which is broken. Seems very short sighted for a company.

When we changed from SP to BG, our energy monitor no longer worked.

Oh, I've just email my new supplier (well been with them 3 years nearly) and they are going to come and replace our "SMETS1" with a "SMETS2"
