Renewing expired driving license - how long?

My provisional license has just expired (I know, I know, but I do intend to learn to drive one of these days and it's my main form of ID). I went to renew it at the post office as without a passport can't do it online. The post office is one of the ones in a WH Smiths and had one poor guy running it alone who wasn't trained to help me.

How long do I have to renew it? I can make time in the week if it's urgent but if not would prefer to go back next week.

About 6 weeks ago my dh realised his ran out in March. Took about two weeks and you can still drive.

I did mine online at the beginning of August, it was with me in less than a week.

Just did ours online. You can do it without needing a passport. Came back in 3 working days.

I have tried, wouldn't attempt it at the post office if there was an easier way! It does require a passport for me, not sure how you did it without?

@unvillage you just click next when it asks for your passport. It will then ask for other bits of information. The website is deceiving, it does look like it won’t let you, but it does. There are several YouTube videos detailing the steps, without having a passport. Just done mine and Dh licences.

DS sent his in April, still not got it back.

I dont have a passport and it was impossible to do online. I had to fill out a paper form. Was a right faff but you're right if you haven't got a pp you have to do it the long way

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 05/09/2022 22:02

@unvillage Ahh apologies if you need a new photo you cannot do so online, unless you have a passport. Luckily we didn’t. (If it’s any consolation, I’m stuck with serial killer photo for a long time yet, whilst Dh looks too young to be plausible).

unvillage · 05/09/2022 22:42

I'm not asking how long it takes to get it back, I'm asking how long after it expires can I renew it? Can I just go in with a provisional licence that expired a year ago and ask to renew it? Because if so great I don't need to stress about it haha. I don't know how to phrase it more clearly.

Yes, it has been 10 years since it was issued so a new photo is needed, it's not just a change of name or address which I could do online without a passport :)

According to dvla a licence expires when you are 70, although the picture expires every ten years. So it’s ‘valid’ but presumably not valid to be used as ID?
With a full licence you can still legally drive whilst your licence is away being renewed/updated.

A few years ago I suddenly realised my licence had expired nearly 12 months previously! I just renewed it then and there were no issues with it
