I put drain unblocker in my dishwasher - help

Ok so I know this was a stupid idea and I wasn’t thinking!!
Just moved into a new house and there is a pretty old dishwasher here. Yesterday I unloaded it and noticed the water hadn’t drained out of the bottom, lots of murky water still there. I had a feel around to see if there was anything blocking it and there wasn’t then I stupidly listened to my husband and put mr muscle drain unblocker in there! (Moral of story…don’t listen to husbands!!)
that was yesterday- I’ve just put an empty wash on to see what happens but just wondered if anyone has any advice?
will I have sort of poisoned it putting that stuff in there?

Have you run it empty on a cycle? If not run it empty. If it doesn’t drain again I think you hold the main On button and that forces it to drain.
Then run it again empty with a dishwasher tablet. If it drains it’ll be ok to use.
Have you taken the filter out and cleaned it?

This is bizarre but it works - when my dishwasher (a Bosch) doesn't drain, I pull it out and tilt it to the left hand side for about a minute, then put it back and it works fine. I was very sceptical when I read this online but thought it was worth a try.

Is it still blocked?

I don't think Mr Muscle will cause any problems. It's designed for unblocking sinks & Ubends isn't it? Dishwashers just collect waster/sludge at the bottom and a simple pump pushes it along a plastic hose and into the waste.

Some candidates for drainage problems are: Something stopping the pump impeller from rotating. Too much stuff in the filters, Hose or drain blocked, Pump not running. It's normally disgusting in all those areas.

Thanks for all your replies.
Update: I ran the empty cycle and it flooded into the kitchen ☹️
so the kitchen floor is covered in very strong smelling water! Inside the washing machine also hasn’t drained and is filled with foamy water.
plan now is to bail out as much water as possible then investigate as you’ve suggested.
I did check the filter and inside the washing machine last night and there were no obvious blockages so it must be further along.
it’s strange because it worked fine the first few times I’ve used it but maybe there’s a blockage and it’s been building up to flood level with each cycle!

Your pump might have broke. Might not be a blockage?!

Sunflowerlily · 05/09/2022 17:01

Sorry I keep saying washing machine in that last post - I definitely mean DISHWASHER 🙈🙈🙈
I’ve really lost it today!!

Yes it definitely seems like this could be the case, I’ll check it out

Wear protective clothing, goggles and gloves if this is a caustic unblocker.

Then get a bucket, washing up bowl, screwdriver and metal coat hanger, put the bowl underneath the bend, disconnect the pipe where it joins the sink drain, put the pipe into the bucket and start cleaning out the blockage both in the pipe and the sink drain with the coat hanger.

It'll probably be a horrible sludgy, grey mess.

When that's done, keep the pipe in the bucket, turn the machine on and then press and hold the start button, as that usually makes it start a drain cycle.

If it's clear, reconnect and try again with a quick fill and drain.

Chikapu · 05/09/2022 17:03

Make sure you wear gloves OP, drain unblocker isn't something you want on your skin.

Isaidnoalready · 05/09/2022 17:07

Rock it and start a cycle it should drain away? Don't continue the cycle if it doesn't drain you should hear it draining

Can you pull it out and check the hoses?

How is your kitchen sink?

LollingAround · 05/09/2022 17:15

It goes against the grain but I'd recommend reading the troubleshooting info for your machine. I always try and fix things myself but sometimes instructions or YouTube tutorials are what are needed.

NancyVicious · 05/09/2022 17:20

I put drain unblocker down the sink, they weren't blocked but there was a bit of a smell so I thought this would clean it out. The drain unblocker solidified and I had to take all the pipes off under the sink and hack it out with a knife. I followed the instructions too. Won't bother with that again

That sounds like a sensible option.....are you new here? 😂

Thanks for all your messages and tips. Tried everything I could last night but doesn’t seem salvageable. Was planning on getting a new one at some point anyway so looks like that will be happening sooner rather than later!
