Cold meals

I suppose this could be related to cost of living but I'm in the fortunate position to be asking this out of choice. My DC have a hot meal and pud at school each day and much prefer a cold meal in the evening. They're primary school age.
What are your favourite cold or no-fuss meals pls? I need something to add to the rota of ham pittas with salad, sausage sandwiches, beans on toast, and erm.... Not much else!
They don't like soup (Philistines!)

Do they really prefer a cold meal in the evening ALL year around???

Could you reheat baked potatoes in the microwave and add coleslaw, or tuna/sweet corn, or cheese or whatever fillings they eat?

Hummus, grated cheese, grated carrot and rocket (or lettuce) wraps or sandwiches?

Quiche and salad?

Cold pizzas they made the night before from wraps, tomato paste and toppings of choice?

@MarmiteCoriander "Hummus, grated cheese, grated carrot and rocket (or lettuce) wraps or sandwiches"

At the risk of sounding dim, do you put all those things together? It sounds wonderful!

@WineIsMyCarb I know what you mean about the hot meals. My 9 year old will only eat 2 hot meals from the school menu and when he comes home he asks for a packed lunch so it became a habit of sorts. The food he would have eaten anyway just in the wrong order, we call it lunch for dinner 😁

Mmmm cold pizza.

Cold pasta?
A grazing board type thing
Mezze
Shawarma type flatbread wraps
Savoury muffins

WineIsMyCarb · 04/09/2022 23:32

Exactly @RicherThanYew . Not all of these are technically 'cold' but just more.... Lunchified?!
Jacket potatoes great idea... I'm sure with various fillings we can call those different meals.

Homemade pizza sounds great @MarmiteCoriander

I thought you were serving beans on toast cold for a minute … but you just mean snacky meals!

Omelette
Falafel with yoghurt/hummus ( I make a large batch and keep some in the freezer)
Cheese on toast
Eggy bread
Quesadillas (bastardised simple
version)
Boiled eggs & soldiers & veg
Smoked mackerel pate on crackers & veg Savoury muffins with egg, veg & cheese (I keep meaning to try making these)

This combo was a sandwich I used to buy from Boots. I'm not vegan, but it was a vegan sandwich I really enjoyed, but haven't seen for sale in years. Tasty though and filling. It had rocket- but kids might find that too peppery, hence my lettuce suggestion 😀

Was gonna say quiche

Tapas? Cold meat, veg sticks, Crackers, cheese?

PenguinLove1 · 05/09/2022 00:23

Tuna and sweetcorn pasta?

LittleFriendSusan · 05/09/2022 08:31

Basically everything that Minipie said!

Halloumi? In a pitta with grated carrot, beetroot, salad, sauce (chilli jam / sweet chilli / houmous / minty yoghurt / tahini, anything like that) or with couscous salad / tabbouleh? Or mine like those sachets of flavoured couscous for a really quick fix.

Frittata (though neither of mine will eat it...)

Fish finger wraps / sandwich / tacos

Breaded chicken fillets / rotisserie chicken in baguettes with salad

Pizza wraps? (tortilla wrap spread with tomato purée mixed with olive oil, top with pepperoni / veg / grated mozzarella & grill / oven bake. DD likes to make them with Aioli instead of tomato)

Those Gosh! bites e.g. beetroot / sweet potato are nice in a wrap as a change from falafel.

Not all cold but quick & easy & fairly light.

Thanks everyone. A few of these will be wild flavour sensations for mine (their palettes are a bit like 1950s English husband's who perhaps thought spaghetti was 'foreign muck' - can't wait to whip out the halloumi!!)

Time for a wild adventure around some international cuisine! (Ahem hummous)
