Please help me with my tooth

Upper Tooth, midway round. Had a root canal after I cracked in January 2020.

Recently it started feeling sore. Went to dentist, did X-ray couldn’t see anything. Gave me antibiotics. Still sore, she reluctantly referred me to a root canal specialist. He did scan said root canal looks absolutely fine, could be pain from grinding and to get a moth guard. I had been through a stressful period so assumed was that.

Paid for a tooth clean, hygeniest said couldn’t understand why I was sore around the gum as the nerve should be gone or something. Teeth looked fine no gum disease. Been using night guard.

Tooth now hurts when I eat food ie when I bite down on it.

Ive spent so much money already and at my wits end. Does anyone have advice? Feeling quite stupid.

It might be cracked, they can be really hard to see, cracks don't always show up on xrays either. Is it crowned already?

Lucyintheskywithrubies · 04/09/2022 22:12

Yes it is already root canaled and crowned @postitnot . I just wondered why the super duper scan of the root canal person didn't see a problem. What should I do?!

Interested cos I've been having tooth pain recently. Had to get an emergency appt at a new dentist but xray didn't show anything. They did say I've got gum disease and thought it was a gum infection and have had 2 lots of antibiotics which seem to help but then pain comes back. I've got an appt for a check up a week on Friday but I'm worried it's gonna cost a fortune to get to the bottom of what's going on. I'm also panicking cos already had a couple of teeth taken out on the upper left hand side and don't want to lose anymore. Fortunately if it did need removing you wouldn't be able to see it really but it's stressful.

@Crinkle77 you are lucky - mine is right where you can see. Hoping a dentist will come along and make some suggestions.

Hope you get sorted.

@Lucyintheskywithrubies what has ended up happening?

I have terrible tooth pain now and the dentist has referred me to a root canal specialist..... Its taking a month to get in. I am not sure I can bare the pain until then.
I had another dentist look at it and he wanted to go straight in but he just said if it doesn't work he'll remove the tooth.... seemed a bit 'gung ho' to me and he wasn't a specialist.

I've got antibiotics and am living on toothpaste swishing in my mouth which seems to calm it a bit but clearly its a bit awkward doing that all the time. Also taking pain killers when i'm totally desperate😬

@SoTiredNeedHoliday i have been wearing my mouth guard and I have to say the tooth is a lot better!

I really hope you get it sorted. It cost me a bloody fortune!

I have a cracked molar (7 left lower) and get pain between it and No.6 when food gets trapped between them and pain in the gum.
Using a Chlorhexidine mouthwash applied with a soft toothbrush between the teeth and on the gum clears it up after removing the food debris.I have bruxism and TMJ and wear a mouthguard at night.
I guess eventually it will have to be extracted. No root canal work for me !

Apparently if you bite on something hard (and I got a twinge when I did this recently) it can upset the underlying ligaments or whatever structure there are and it can be sore for a good fortnight or so while it heals.

I didn’t know that and thought I’d cracked a tooth but I hadn’t. The dentist sent me away to see how it went. It recovered fine.

If you are grinding your teeth or clenching your jaw in your sleep it could be down to stress and it’s time to sort out the cause. Easier said and all, just mentioning because the mouth guard is only a sticking plaster for an underlying issue that needs addressed. Story of my life lol!!

DesertOrchi · 17/09/2022 15:59

I know about the stress, but am not in a position to sort it as it is up to other people over whom I have no control.Life is pretty crap, but no one cares.
