Non iPhone Phone recommendations for 12yo?

Any suggestions? DS12 has my old iPhone hand me down which has limped on for nearly a year before nearly giving up the ghost. He has autism and goes to a SEN school so limited contact with friends outside of phone and gaming due to distance and he's proved he can look after a phone really well so I'd like to get him a proper new phone for his birthday coming up.

Can't stretch to a new iPhone but I'm sure there's more to life than apple products??!! Does anyone have any suggestions? Or likely costs of a good enough smart phone that's not an iPhone?

Thanks,

Older iPhones such as the iPhone 6? They are still available for a lot less.

We're a family of Motorola's.
Good value for money, decent camera, and most importantly it's a smart phone.

Quite frankly I can't afford an iPhone outright (I only buy phones outright.) Even the second hand ones were pricey with limited guarantees, where as most friends DC have their parents hand me downs so know it's negative points.

My autistic son has a Motorola. It's really good for the money and pretty bomb proof (it gets dropped a lot)

Sorry cost of DD1s last phone, a Moto g22 was £150. Good camera, finger print and facial recognition, very good battery life, etc, etc, and my favourite feature - two shakes to turn on the torch!

Some refurbished phones for £10 a month

Get a refurbed iPhone 10 or higher or do you want new?

What's the budget? Monthly contract or buy handset outright?

Panicmode1 · 04/09/2022 19:31

We have four children and we are all on Tesco Mobile (runs on O2) - mixture of Apple and Samsungs. Monthly cost less than £100 for 5 contracts (DH has his through work) including buying the phone and significant data for them all....

That's what he's got now - it's tiny and dying!

Happy to spend a up to £200 on a new phone (got a cheap sim only contract we can transfer). Hadn't thought of a refurbished iPhone. Just a bit put off by handing down my old phone and it dying after a year. Don't want to hand down another one and it happen again - is refurbished any different to a factory reset on an old phone of ours?

He's a really good kid who doesn't have the easiest of life so I'd like to do something nice and get him a proper phone of his own.

Will look in to Motorola as that has had a few positive suggestions!

Blimey - how do you manage 5 phone contracts for under £100??!

Tesco have some great deals. DD got a Nokia g9 or 10 for £9 a month or would have been around £100 outright. It was really good but the phone keeps crashing not long after the warranty has run out. I've just given her my outgoing iPhone XR. She is ecstatic. I just need to get a new battery for it so it lasts longer than 2 mins.

LongBlobson · 04/09/2022 19:46

Another vote for Motorola.

cherrypiepie · 04/09/2022 19:54

Depend what iPhone you gave him.

The 6s and the 6 are pretty obsolete now. I had. 6s, 8 and 12. The 6s was awful. The 8 was fine. Dsis has a 10 and that is better than the 8. The 12 is really good.

my 12 year old has a fairly basic samsung phone (admittedly I got from ebay) and a £8/month sim only contract. He mainly uses it for games and messages friends and AFAIK is not too uncool for school (although to be fair he does a lot of things that others think are incredibly nerdy and he either doesn't realise or doesnt care!)

I’ve bought second hand iPhones from Music Magpie and have found them to be good to buy from.
