How do you get started at the gym / what on earth do you do?!

As per the thread title!

I’ve always been a runner but looking to mix things up a bit. A new gym has opened a few minutes walk from my house. I often read threads where people say they spend their free time ‘going to the gym’

if I joined, I wouldn’t have a clue what to do there, and consequently would feel like a dick. How do you know what you are meant to do?!

They will likely give you an induction and often they offer a routine to get you started

Yeah induction and they should give you a programme to work through - but to be honest most seem to just check you are safe on their machines. Unless you get a pt or find a programme online

Induction and I did a few sessions with PT, highly recommend as they do a tailored programme for you and focus on form which is very important
