Well not actually toothache but my gum is really really sore and achy.
There's no tooth there and hasn't been for years.
I'm doing warm salt water rinses and painkillers.
Orajel didn't help and made my gum sting.
I have amoxicillin antibiotics in the cupboard which are only a few weeks old.
Should I start them?
I'm assuming that's all dentist would do anyway Incase it's a infection.
Or not?

Ffs this is how antibiotic resistance becomes a problem. Have a really good floss around the adjacent teeth, swish with hot salt water and give it a few days.

Take the antibiotics with you if it will make you feel better but they may not even work, it depends what bacteria is causing it, not all antibiotics work for all infections.

If it wasn't for going on holiday I wouldn't even think to take them ..I just don't want to be in pain on holiday

I'd take the antibiotics.

Why have you got unused antibiotics?

veronicabbt · 03/09/2022 15:20

I was prescribed them for a uti but it cleared up before I started with cranberry juice so didn't take them.

Buy some orajel, it’ll numb it up.

veronicabbt · 03/09/2022 15:27

Weirdly the orajel made it sting as soon as I touched it

Do not take the antibiotics. That’s a pointless misuse of them.
keep up the hot salt mouthwashes . Hope it resolves itself soon And you have a lovely holiday

Normally my dentist gives me amoxicillin or metronidazole for any gum /tooth pain
That's why I thought to take them

Swish with some diluted TCP? Always does the trick for me when my gums are aching in old extraction spots.

Tigertigertigertiger · 03/09/2022 15:40

Prescribing amoxicillin for any tooth gum pain is very bad practice. The dental indications for antibiotics are very limited but sadly many dentists still prescribe antibiotics inappropriately often at the request of patients

amylou8 · 03/09/2022 15:42

Try a hydrogen peroxide rinse, you can pick it up hydrogen peroxide in pharmacies, and dilute it to about 3%. What are the antibiotics? Amoxicillin will do toothache but the more UTI specific ones aren't likely to help. Where are you going? Quite a lot of counties you can pick up ABs easily from the local pharmacy.

sidsgranny · 03/09/2022 15:42

Can you go to a pharmacy? Pharmacists are excellent and they may be able to tell by looking if there's any infection.

RuthW · 03/09/2022 15:43

The antibiotics you need for a uti and different to the ones you need from the dentist.

veronicabbt · 03/09/2022 15:43

I popped to boots earlier and she just gave me the orajel.
Once putting that on it really stung.
Bonjella helped a little bit
I'm going to Spain.

The antibiotics are amoxicillin
I've had these for a tooth /gum infection before

I used mouthwash when I had gum pain, it really helped to numb It.

veronicabbt · 03/09/2022 18:05

After looking with my phone light and mirror it looks like a big canker sore on my gums

IGLU is brilliant for mouth ulcers. Much better than anything else I’ve ever tried. By a couple of tubes and just keep applying.
