Had a LLETZ procedure today

Abnormal cells were detected at my recent cervical screening, so today I had a colposcopy and LLETZ procedure. I got a bit upset and didn't really take in what was said to me. What is the likelihood that I have cancer? I'll have a follow up soon but I'm not really sure what to expect. I've had the HPV vaccine and thought it was becoming unusual to have cervical cancer following the jab. I think that's why I was a bit taken by surprise today, I thought it would be a quick look just to be on the safe side.

Are you sure you had both in the one day? That’s not usual practice.

I think pretty low. I had one years ago. I think it is much more likely to be removing abnormal cells that could have become cancer in future (but are now hopefully gone) than actual cancer

I’ve had both in one day; the dye attached so quickly that they said it needed to be done straight away.

@ButtercupBluebell I didn’t have cancer and the cells were at the highest grade for concern.

I’ve had a LLETZ, got the all clear at my next appt and got discharged back to GP for smear every 5 years. No issues since. Look after yourself, try and stay away from Dr Google, get some treats in and rest up 💐

I had a colposcopy and lletz on the same day. CIN3 cells detected on my smear and had the cells removed. No cancer was detected and I'm fine 5 years later. The wait for the results was the worst part. But remember it is extremely unlikely it is cancer, and you are lucky they have detected the cells early enough and treated it before it became a problem.

Hi OP, hope you are feeling ok now. They quite often do Colposcopy and LLETZ at the same appointment in my area as it speeds things up. You'll probably have around a 6 week wait for the results. (in my experience, North Wales.)
They will grade the cell changes as CIN1, CIN2, CIN3 or CGIN. Have a look on Jo's Trust website as it explains it very well.
None of these are cancer, they are cell changes which can potentially turn into cancer in the future. Hopefully they'll have got everything with the LLETZ procedure and you won't need any more treatment.

I've had LLETZ twice in the past year, they found CIN3 and CGIN, hoping the next smear is all clear!
