Vax - carpet now stinks

So we got a VAX, DH has been rather other enthusiastic and the carpets look great but they STINK, I think he's got them too wet. I can't bear the smell. How can I fix it?

Have they dried or are they still damp? If they are still damp go over them with the Vax machine again but don't add water just keep sucking it out of the carpet, and keep going and going till you are getting nothing coming out of them.

Of that fails and they have now dried with a damp smell you may have to wash them again but this time with a odour neutraliser detergent industrial strength type job but this time keep going and going sucking the water out after the wash till they are all but touch dry.

Open doors, windows, he's an eejit. Go over them again tomorrow try to suck up a bit more. I use mine twice a year never stinks. I wonder if it's the underlay

Are they wool carpets? They do get a funny smell when you wash.
