Am I imagining this - Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Have just started to read Charlie and the Chocolate Factory to my DS - brought back a really clear memory of the copy I owned as I child.

I really clearly remember the book cover (see pic) but also have a memory of the pages being ever so slightly speckled which gave the pages a chocolate scent. Am I making that bit up?! Have given it a quick Google and nothing obvious popped up but admittedly haven't delved too deep.

I picked up a copy of that book with that cover in my classroom today. I'm pretty sure the pages are the same as all the other Roald Dahls published in the same style! But I shall double check tomorrow.

Seems quite unlikely, I’m afraid. The production costs on that for the mass market edition would have been enormous, and I can’t see any special edition info anywhere.

Possibly either your copy got hot chocolate spilled on it, or your imagination sparked the smell in your brain. Which is cool!

Echobelly · 31/08/2022 20:39

Yeah, I think you've imagined that. I reckon it would be quite well known if that had been a thing!

I can’t find a chocolate edition with a quick search, but they did have a peach scented book for James and the Giant Peach. So a chocolate one is possible?

Interesting - looks like the US publishers did this one, and a Matilda ‘chocolate cake’ edition. And there was a U.K. edition of The Twits with scratch & sniff stickers.

That's so odd, I have such a clear mental image of it! Even told DS all about it and he was very envious! Maybe it was just the inside of the cover....? But still odd no one can find any mention of this one specifically.

Sounds fun! I love reading Roald Dahl with our two DSs. The great glass elevator is horrendously racist however - I truly didn’t remember this making an impact when I read as a child - you have been warned…

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 31/08/2022 21:00

Most of my Roald Dahl books have got hot chocolate stains (and the worst witch). Maybe that's what you're remembering?

sittingonacornflake · 31/08/2022 21:04

Did you read whilst eating chocolate perhaps? Messy Grin

Oh no, I don't remember reading that one as a child (is it a sequel?) But it is in the box set. Will perhaps have to 'lose' that one - thanks for the warning.

I remember a version of the book with a coloured scratch and sniff type page but it wasn’t in the original book
Off topic but that spurred up memories of the goosebumps book with the slime in the cover 😀

Could be! I Now have visions of my mum painstakingly dusting each page with cocoa powder Grin Maybe I need to do that for DS although sure it would just end in a big chocolatey, dusty mess...

Lots of my old Roald Dahl books developed page speckles and that vanilla-y chocolates old book scent. I think it was the type of paper they were printed on.

LyndaSnellsSniff · 31/08/2022 21:25

How lovely would that have been?!

You got me thinking and I looked for the edition I remember reading as a child.

Maybe it was mildew spots?

Hi.
I definitely had this book growing up. It had speckled pages and smelt of chocolate. It had a gold cover like the one posted above.

Interestingly, Charlie was supposed to be black, but the editors made Dahl change it. The point was supposed to be a poor black boy could only get by chance what four rich white kids all bought their way into.
