Anyone used apple airtag to track their kids (not secretly)

DD not allowed to take phone to school (their rule) but as they are going in by public transport (year 7, new school) I would like to be able to track her. Thought about an apple airtag on her keyring but read they ping if away from tracking phone for too long as anti stalking measure, and obv don't want it to ping in class and get her into trouble. Anyone got experience of this?

Why does she need a tracker? My AirTag beeps on a morning when I take my keys out of the faraday box, I assume it's because it's not been connected to my phone overnight? So about 8 hours max.

I am just really nosy. Why do you keep your phone in a faraday box?

Beansycheese · 31/08/2022 19:19

Should I be doing that too?

Ooooh, I know that from Dr Who, it's a space surrounded by thingies that protect you from waves and shit

As a parent, it's only natural to want to ensure the safety of our kids. I've actually used AirTags to keep track of my children too, but I prefer to place them in their school bags rather than on their keyrings. That way, I can make sure they're heading to school and not wandering off somewhere else. It gives me peace of mind, but I don't want them to know about it to avoid any unnecessary discussions. By the way, for those considering using AirTags, I came across a helpful post - do airtags need to be charged. It's worth checking out for more insights. Just a suggestion!

Could you articulate why you need it ? Bearing in mind all us adults coped without phones.

Why not experiment with her doing school journey without one and see how it goes

We live in a different time now where phones are very much the norm, and it is an expectation in society that we can contact people more easily than we could in 1974.

I have 'find my iPhone' and 'find my friends' set up. If I can track where a missing phone might be, why on Earth wouldn't I want to track where my child, who is way more precious, would be?

Coyoacan · 12/07/2023 01:55

I may be wrong, but I understood that airtags only work at short distances.

Could you articulate what you're doing on mumsnet? Or the internet in general? Bearing in mind that we all used to cope just fine without it, of course.

We live in a very different world now

I know loads people whose kids have air tags in PE bags as well as on key rings.

whiteboardking · 11/03/2024 23:15

I use find my iPhone. Useful to check if kids have stayed at a school club or are in their way home. On public transport I can check if they on the bus / train. Or indeed if they are in detention

TheSnowyOwl · 11/03/2024 23:18

There are plenty of alternative ways that people can keep track of others if the AirTag does beep (but I can’t think of mine doing so after a day apart). Just Google tracking support for people with dementia for other suggestions.

CatherinedeBourgh · 11/03/2024 23:21

If the air tag is in their name it won't ping. They can then share it with you and you'll be able to track it.

Or they could have an apple watch?

If you are trying to use your phone to get the direction that's true. But when they get close to phones they send their location so you can track it with that.

HearMeSnore · 11/03/2024 23:32

@Coyoacan My DH has one on his key ring and I was able to see where he was having dinner on a recent trip to France. As long as it's within pinging distance of an Apple device the linked phone will show you where it is.

There are other types of electronic tag that you can put on pet collars. They are the ones that only work within a short distance.
